MILPITAS — Santa Clara County officials said that repairs after a 30-foot wide sinkhole closed two westbound lanes of Montague Expressway in Milpitas have been completed and the roadway has reopened well in advance of the Monday commute.
“We were able to fill up the sinkhole and complete repairs to the westbound lanes on Montague today,” Harry Freitas, Director of the County of Santa Clara Roads and Airports Department, said in a statement Sunday evening. “We know how inconvenient the expressway closure is for drivers. Our staff along with the contractor teams worked around the clock to complete the repairs and reopen westbound Montague for Monday morning commute.”
The two westbound lanes were closed Friday evening between Trade Zone Boulevard and the railroad tracks after the sinkhole developed. All westbound lanes were closed as crews worked over the weekend to repair the damage.
Repairs included digging out the sinkhole area, stabilizing the soil underneath, back filling the sinkhole to the surface, and paving the surface of the roadway. Officials originally thought the work would not be completed until just before the Monday evening commute.
