President Trump’s supporters left a rally where he was speaking and stormed the US Capitol, breaching the Senate chamber and forcing Congress to halt the certification of the electoral college vote for President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.

The Washington Post reported one woman died after being shot in the Capitol building. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declaring a 6 p.m. curfew in the District of Columbia through 6 a.m. on Thursday. By the time law enforcement officers finished removing the pro-Trump mob, Washington D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee confirmed at least 13 rioters were arrested and five weapons were recovered.

President-elect Joe Biden called on Trump to “demand an end to this siege,” while Trump later told his supporters to “go home” in a national address. Shortly after an FBI SWAT team was seen clearing out the Capitol building and President Trump’s press secretary announced the National Guard was on its way, lawmakers confirmed their plan to finish the certification:

Amid the chaos at the Capitol, explosive devices were found and destroyed there as well as the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee buildings just blocks away. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party regained control of the Senate as Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock were declared winners in their respective Georgia races. There were also reports that Trump supporters were marching at some statehouses.

Roughly five hours after the first evacuation and lockdown orders at the Capitol, the legislative bodies reconvened to finish carrying out their constitutional duty to certify the electoral college vote for Biden.
