Oakland police shut down a Fourth of July sideshow early Friday but not before  one person was struck by a car.

Authorities estimated that at least 400 people gathered near the Interstate 880 ramp on High Street for the sideshow about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, making it the largest since the department ramped up enforcement this past spring.

The condition of the person hit, or if they even went to a hospital, was not immediately known Friday.

In a graphic video of the event, as many as three vehicles can be seen at different times performing dangerous acts of reckless driving while being cheered on by spectators.

Some spectators shot fireworks into the air and there were some reports of possible gunfire as well.

How many people were arrested or cited at the event or had their vehicles towed was not immediately known.

The California Highway Patrol and the Oakland Police Department announced renewed cooperation between the departments to crackdown on sideshow activity, which has seen a reduction over the past two months.

Sideshows are decades old in Oakland and feature vehicles speeding and driving erratically as they are cheered on by spectators, sometimes in the hundreds. They have been marred by violence, including fatal and non-fatal shootings and other assaults, and some crashes have proven fatal. The increased enforcement began April 21 after sideshow activity the previous weekend saw a box truck and an AC Transit bus set ablaze in East Oakland.

Since then, a few relatively small sideshows have been quickly shut down — people arrested and cited and their vehicles towed, authorities said.

That is in store for anyone participating in sideshows, authorities said.

“Violent, disruptive and illegal behavior will not be tolerated in Oakland,” Oakland police Officer Johna Watson said earlier, adding that the increased enforcement will continue throughout the summer.
