A hearse carrying the casket of Trevor Irby, 25, has left the funeral service held Thursday in the Romulus Central School auditorium in Romulus, N.Y., the Associated Press reported.
Pallbearers dressed in Pittsburgh Steelers jerseys carried Irby’s casket in honor of the ardent Steelers fan, according to AP.
Irby and two others were killed July 28 when Santino William Legan cut through a fence and opened fire with a Romanian-made AK-47 style-rifle at the popular Gilroy Garlic Festival.
According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, “Irby was at the festival with his girlfriend, Sarah Warner, when a gunman opened fire on the crowd. … Irby and Warner moved together to Santa Cruz in January. He worked as a medical assistant at a nursing home, according to friend Steven Wyrosdick. Irby and Warner planned to move back to New York in August, where Irby planned to study to become a physician’s assistant, Wyrosdick said.”
Irby was a native of Romulus, in Seneca County, who graduated from Romulus Central School in 2012 and Keuka College in 2017, where he majored in biology and was a multi-sport athlete, according to AP.
Family members of Santino Legan apologized to the victims more than a week after the shooting.
“To the families of Stephen Romero, Keyla Salazar, Trevor Irby, and to the injured that survived this tragedy, we cannot begin to describe our despair at his actions,” the statement continued, listing the names of the two children and one young adult Legan killed. “We want to express our deepest and sincerest apologies for the loss and pain that he has caused.”
According to the Sentinel, “Irby’s college friends are raising funds to support his family’s expenses via a GoFundMe campaign.” As of Thursday, more than $38,000 had been raised.
