The Berkeley Symphony’s Chamber Series continues April 14 with a special early evening concert curated by the Symphony’s “Music Alive” Composer in Residence, Anna Clyne. Titled “Anna Clyne Presents,” the event at the Piedmont Center for the Arts features a range of repertoire from Bach to contemporary works, performed by violinists Matthew Szemela and Emanuela Nikiforova, violist Darcy Rindt and cellist Samsun Loon.
The program begins with Loon’s performance of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major and ends with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor. In between, the quartet will play Jessie Montgomery’s “Strum” and Caroline Shaw’s “Entr’acte.” Clyne’s own “Rest These Hands” for solo violin completes the program.
London-born Clyne, a Grammy-nominated champion of contemporary works, previously served as composer-in-residence for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music; under the baton of music director Cristian Măcelaru, her five-movement “Abstractions” was presented at Cabrillo last summer. She currently serves as composer in residence for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; she concludes her residency in Berkeley at the end of this season.
