Whether you can make it to the playa this year or not, you can always dress the Burning Man vibe – you know, the requisite fishnets, tutus and bejeweled goggles to create an otherworldly, steampunky, fantasy-frilled frock that’s distinctly you … or maybe your alter ego.

Here are some ways to score your Burner garb:

Online, of course — There are pages and pages of Etsy sites that offer everything from a psychedelic unitard from Badinka to rhinestone dust goggles from GalacticHalo. Just go to Etsy.com and search “Burning Man.”

The old-fashioned way — make it yourself. If you’re the crafty type, get thee to a fabric store for anything tie-dye, furry, lacy or shiny. Then illuminate it all with EL Wire (battery-operated electroluminescent wire – get it online or at Fry’s Electronics.

Thrift stores — With stores in Berkeley and San Francisco, Buffalo Exchange  has long been a go-to for Burner wear. It’s awesome for gently-used gear you won’t mind getting beat up, sweaty and dirty out in the Nevada desert. Hit up Army surplus stores too. You’ll need some sturdy boots on the playa.

The Haight —San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district is a classic stop for all things funky and Burning Man. Check out the Piedmont Boutique for neon wigs, sequined leggings, furry vests, glittery body suits, feathered masks, boas, tutus and one-of-a-kind or custom-made accessories. (Just be careful that those feathers are well-attached, or you may wander into MOOP territory or other taboos in our Burning Man Survival Guide.) You’ll find the shop at 1452 Haight St. You can’t miss the store. It’s the one with the giant fishnet-clad legs sticking out the front.
