Calling all Frida Kahlo fanatics!
Hundreds of people flocked to the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek on Sunday to get a taste of Frida-inspired clothing, photographs, art and music at the kickoff for a new exhibit inspired by and devoted to Kahlo. “The World of Frida” combines juried and invitational shows with a national photography exhibit, “Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray,” and runs through Sept. 16.
On Sunday afternoon, a line wrapped around the building as people waited patiently for a ticket to the opening party.
People of all ages shopped the Frida-inspired mercado for local merchandise, including Siempre Viva’s handmade Frida Kahlo and Selena Quintanilla dolls. Frida lookalikes battled it out in a contest. And Frida met high fashion on the catwalk with a show featuring designers such as San Francisco-based Flower Couture and Los Angeles’ Paulina Clothing. The show featured intricate headpieces and sugar skull makeup honoring Mexican culture.
The World of Frida exhibit, which includes art and photographs celebrating the life, style and legacy of the famous Mexican artist, runs through Sept. 16. Other special events include a “Tequila Tasting and Paint a Frida” event, 6:30-9 p.m. Aug. 23. (Contact the museum directly for information on advance tickets.)
Details: Admission to the gallery, which is open from 12 to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday, is $3-$5. Bedford Gallery, Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek; www.bedfordgallery.org
