The coronavirus-stricken Grand Princess cruise ship made way under the Golden Gate Bridge about 11 a.m. Monday on its way to a dock at the Port of Oakland. It arrived at the port about an hour later.
With 3,535 people aboard the ship, disembarking will take a long time.
Californians who have not been tested or who tested negative will be moved to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield or Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego for a mandatory 14-day quarantine and medical monitoring for signs of an infection.
Crew members not needing medical care will be quarantined on the ship. Those needing medical care will be sent to a California medical facility.
“Although state and national officials considered a number of ports — including in Alameda and the cruise’s original departure point, San Francisco — they decided on Oakland in part for its ability to accommodate a ship of the Grand Princess’s size and surrounding land that could be easily secured,” according to staff writer Fiona Kelliher.
Meanwhile, chef Jose Andres and his World Central Kitchen have prepared meals for those aboard the ship. “More than 3,500 salads have been prepared and packaged by its commercial kitchen in San Francisco for passengers and crew members. Food had also been delivered to the ship on Sunday, the group said,” according to staff writer Linda Zavoral.
