Thursday marks the 75th anniversary of Allied forces launching a combined naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France.

Leaders from around the world gathered Wednesday in Portsmouth, England, to commemorate the anniversary and honor the men and women who participated in what still stands as the largest naval, air and land operation in history. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May were among the 16 world leaders who attended events throughout the day to mark the anniversary. Members of the British royal family also took part in the commemoration.

Tom Rice, a grizzled 97-year-old ex-paratrooper who landed in a dark in field of wildflowers in Normandy with the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division on June 6, 1944, completed a successful jump almost 75 years to the hour after his D-Day jump, in roughly the same location.
