The Bahamas might be over 2,700 miles away from South Peninsula Hebrew Day School in Sunnyvale, Calif., but that didn’t discourage students at the school to help in some way with the Hurricane Dorian relief effort.
Eighth graders at the school put together relief boxes to send to the Bahamas that was devastated by Hurricane Dorian last month.
The boxes contain clothing, canned foods, toothpaste, toys, batteries and flashlight and letters written by the students.
Adina Levine, 13, was motivated to help after seeing some of the images of the destruction and how close the hurricane came to affecting her own family.
“I felt really bad for these people and I have family in Florida and I was really scared about this hurricane,” Levine said. “I wanted to care for them and send them stuff.”
The efforts by the students were recognized during an assembly. Sunnyvale mayor Larry Klein and Cupertino mayor Steven Scharf gave the students a pep talk and helped put together the relief boxes.
