Tenant protection only oneside of rental market issue

Periodically I read how tenants get more and more protection, such as “Assembly passes bill to cap rent increases” (Page A1, May 30), but I never see anything about property-owner protection.

Tenant advocates should realize that tenant protection is only one side of the tight rental market problem. The problem will remain until the property-owner aspect has been addressed.

Along with a partner, I had 15 rental properties for about 10 years. Then in one year we had two evictions. That’s six months no rent, times two. In the second eviction, the tenant broke every window in the house, tore out the plumbing and electrical, and put a hole in every wall before leaving. We made the repairs and promptly sold every rental we owned.

The Bay Area rental market will always remain expensive and tight as long as state and local government don’t do more to attract rental-property owners.
