Job cuts are coming to communications chipmaker Qualcomm, and it’s possible some Bay Area workers could soon be out of work.
Qualcomm confirmed the job cuts, but not reports that it will shed 1,500 jobs in California. San Diego-based Qualcomm has approximately 34,000 employees worldwide and offices in San Jose and Santa Clara.
The California job cuts are part of a broader workforce reduction that Qualcomm is putting in place across various locations.
“We first evaluated non-headcount expense reductions, but we concluded that a workforce reduction is needed to support long-term growth and success, which will ultimately benefit all our stakeholders,” said a Qualcomm spokesperson in a statement sent to this news organization.
The company is cutting costs as part of a commitment it made in January to reduce expenses by $1 billion.
Qualcomm pledged to reduce its corporate spending as part of its efforts to win over shareholders as it fought a hostile takeover attempt by rival Broadcom. The Trump administration eventually put the brakes on Broadcom’s acquisition plans by cancelling the deal on national-security grounds.
