Before Seth Ator, 36, killed seven people and wounded 22 others in a West Texas shooting spree on Sunday, he failed a gun purchase background check and evaded a background check for the gun used in the shooting.
Ator also had a criminal history, which Texas Gov. Greg Abbott acknowledged in a tweet, saying “we must keep guns out of criminals’ hands.”
The Odessa shooter was arrested in 2001 for criminal trespass and evading arrest, both misdemeanors. Ator was cited last year for a traffic violation involving a federal motor carrier safety violation.
He was fired from his trucking job just hours before his killing rampage, which included hijacking a postal truck and ditching a gold Honda as he shot at people and drove from Midland, Texas into Odessa about 20 miles away.
President Trump tweeted support for federal and local law enforcement and first responders the day after the shooting:
“Great job by Texas Law Enforcement and First Responders in handling the terrible shooting tragedy yesterday. Thank you also to the FBI, @GregAbbott_TX
and all others. A very tough and sad situation!”
