Close to 50,000 panels that make up the AIDS Memorial Quilt are moving from Atlanta to the Bay Area. About 54 tons worth. The project began thirty-three years ago and now memorializes over 105,000 people who have died of AIDS.
Panels for the quilt have been stored in Atlanta since 2001, but are now being moved to their new home in San Leandro, and will be cared for by the National AIDS Memorial.
Portions of the quilt will be on display in Robin Williams Meadows, April 3-5 as part of the 150th birthday celebration of Golden Gate Park.
Organizers say the 1,920 panels on display will be the largest ever of the quilt in San Francisco.
