Jason Momoa sent fans into a social media frenzy by sharing a YouTube video of him going into the desert to shave off his signature beard.

The “Aquaman” and “Game of Thrones” star said he was making a major change in his appearance to encourage people to make major changes to improve the health of our planet. As Momoa slowly shaved away parts of his beard, he bid good-bye to characters he has played — Aquaman, Khal Drogo and others — and talked up the benefits of aluminum cans, which, unlike plastic bottles, are “100 percent recyclable.”

“I just want to do this to bring awareness because plastics are killing our planet and I think we have a solution,” said Momoa, who eventually revealed his bare chin and chiseled jawline. “I don’t want to bitch about it (but) there’s only one thing that will really help our planet and save our planet — as long as we recycle — and that’s aluminum.”

But as Momoa neared the end of his video, he also revealed that he was promoting a new product that uses aluminum.

His video was essentially an extended ad for a new line of canned water he is launching with the Ball Corp., a multibillion-dollar company that says it is the largest supplier of metal cans in the world.

Momoa briefly showed cans of his water that will come in still, alkaline, sparkling and spring versions. The cans carried no product name or identifiable logo, and Momoa offered no other details about the product. Momoa’s video and an Instagram post by the Ball Corp. also gave no other details, such as launch date or price point.

Bustle said it reached out to the Ball Corp. for more information on the product. The Colorado-based company is best known for its early production of glass jars and other items used in home canning, but it has long since diversified into aerospace technology and the manufacture of metal food packaging containers, according to its website.

In his video, Momoa explained that he was proud of a “a product I can take out and give to the world.” He said it might “just be water, but I feel good about it. I’m going to recycle this, and I know we can recycle this.”

Momoa’s YouTube video had been viewed more than 1.3 million times as of Thursday afternoon, with many of the comments and much of the media coverage focusing on fans’ positive reaction to the hunky star making this significant change to his personal appearance. Momoa said it had been the first time he had shaved his beard since 2012.

But fans also loved the pro-recycling message; since it came from such a attractive, popular star, it means they are probably inclined to try out his canned water when it finally hits stores.
