Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Paul Simon, hip-hop/soul superstar Childish Gambino and hit-making duo Twenty One Pilots will headline the 2019 Outside Lands festival, organizers announced today.

Other big name acts on the bill include multiple Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves, soul superstar Leon Bridges, electronic music giant Flume, pop-punk icons Blink-182, gospel-R&B legend Mavis Staples, Bay Area favorites the Counting Crows, folk-rock act the Lumineers, Christian pop star Lauren Daigle and Lil Wayne, who ranks among the best rappers of all time.

Three-day passes for the 12th annual festival, set for Aug. 9-11 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, run $385 to $1,595 and go on sale at 10 a.m. March 28 via www.sfoutsidelands.com.

It’s another impressively deep, diverse and appealing lineup for the festival, which over the years has featured such incredible acts as Lorde, Phish, Stevie Wonder, Metallica, Kendrick Lamar, Paul McCartney, J. Cole, Florence + the Machine, Janet Jackson, The Who and Radiohead.

“I think we hit a lot of different areas, so we are pretty excited,” says Allen Scott of Another Planet Entertainment, which puts on the festival with Superfly and Starr Hill Presents.

It’s a bill that promoters believe will appeal to a wide range of listeners, from teens to their parents.

“A lot of the festivals are getting younger and younger,” Scott describing the changing demographics of festival audiences. “We try to keep this multi-generational, so everyone can come to this festival and enjoy it.”

The Simon booking, in particular, ranks as a major score for this festival.

Simon retired from touring in 2018, after a farewell trek that included a stop at Oracle Arena in Oakland. But he’s agreed to do this one-off show in San Francisco and plans to donate the entire net proceeds from his performance to local environmental non-profit organizations.
