It’s going to rain. And rain. And rain some more. In fact, the San Francisco Bay Area is in for a seven-day drenching, wind lashing and all around blustery whoosh, according to the weather forecast. But hey, no worries! There are still plenty of fun things to do over the next week that don’t involve spending more than a minute or two outdoors.
AT THE THEATER: Sing along with Freddie Mercury
The holiday movie onslaught may be over, but there’s still plenty of spectacle to be had at the cineplex, starting with a Sing-Along “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Twentieth Century Fox is re-releasing the Golden Globe-winning biopic back into theaters on Friday, Jan. 11 with — wait for it — song lyric subtitles so we too can be the champions of the world. AT THE COMEDY CLUB: Laugh your head off at SF Sketchfest
SF Sketchfest just opened its 18-day run, which features 250 shows at more than a dozen San Francisco venues. Catch everything from improv to sketch comedy, stand-up and film screenings featuring such A-List performers as Carol Burnett, Margaret Cho, Janeane Garofalo, W. Kamau Bell and oh so many more. Here’s the scoop on what to see, where to go and where to grab a bite (or a drink) beforehand.
ON TV: A wild (and we mean wild!) new show about Silicon Valley
This Sunday, the National Geographic Channel is debuting a new docu-series about the boom-to-bust ’90s in Silicon Valley that goes to extreme measures to depict the era’s surreal scene. How extreme? We’re talking flash mobs, rap battles and a Bill Gates puppet. Read all about it here.
AT THE MUSEUM: Tahiti, science and more
It may be gray and blustery outside, but you’ll warm right up gazing at Gauguin’s beloved tropics. The famous 19th-century artist’s first San Francisco exhibit is at the De Young Museum right now. You’ll find the backstory on the exhibit here, and ticket info and hours on the de Young website here. Other cool museum possibilities: Hands-on fun (and learning) for kids is available at The Exploratorium in San Francisco, The Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland and the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose.
IN A BOOK: Cormoran strikes again
Prefer your J.K. Rowling without wizards? The newest Cormoran Strike thriller, “Lethal White,” came out this fall under her Robert Galbraith nom-de-plume. It’s a twisty tale with enough blackmail, deceit and, of course, murder to get your mind off what’s happening outdoors. (You can read the New York Times review here.) And if you enjoyed “Crazy Rich Asians,” you might also love “Family Trust” by Kathy Wang, a wealthy Chinese immigrant family saga with a dying patriarch, dating 70-something and their two very stressed-out adult children with messy personal lives. There are plenty of great kids books out there, too, including some fun fare your kids can read on their iPad, Kindle or tablet this weekend. Among them: “Lights! Camera! Alice!” the story of the first female filmmaker, the adventures of “Mac B. Kid Spy” and all of these new books, too.
