The Hounds Tooth Inn is a family-owned boutique lodge nestled in the hills of Oakhurst, a dozen miles from the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. The inn offers 12 rooms, a large cottage and a cozy lobby with complimentary chef-driven eats. It’s a great option for lodging near Bass Lake, Mariposa Grove and other attractions at the southern end of Yosemite. Oakhurst itself has several attractions — including a fun brewery and winery — worth a visit, too.
The Hounds Tooth Inn is currently renovating its rooms and lobby. By summer, you’ll find updated furnishings and decor — bye-bye shabby chic, hello modern chic — and a transformed lobby with open kitchen and pizza oven. Also in 2019: The inn’s owners will break ground on 50 modern, steel-and-glass cabins designed by New York architect Jiwon Yoo, Baccarat Hotels’ former director of design. The project is expected to take two years and will, we suspect, put Oakhurst on the architectural map.
ROOMS: The inn has a total of 12 rooms, each with a queen bed and bathroom with soaking tub and shower. Other amenities include fireplaces, TV and WiFi. We stayed in the 850-square-foot Summer Cottage, which has a kitchen, dining area, sofa and twin day bed in addition to the king bed.
ZZZs: That king was perfectly comfortable, with plenty of pillows and extra blankets for those chilly winter nights. Our son liked his day bed, too.
EXTRAS: Included in the price of your stay are chef-driven breakfast dishes — the menu on our visit included chocolate-chip pancakes, an egg-white omelette and cream of buckwheat cereal with coconut milk — in addition to continental eats, an evening wine and cheese reception and plenty of snacks and sodas. Ask about travel concierge services, too.
DETAILS: Rooms start at $125 in winter; $200 in summer. 42071 Highway 41, Oakhurst; www.houndstoothinn.com
