States shut back down as coronavirus infections surge again
The United States on Monday reported 38,800 newly confirmed COVID-19 infections, the Associated Press reported. The national case total now surpasses 2.5 million, or about a quarter of the more than 10 million cases worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Republican governors in Arizona and Texas reversed course on reopening amid the new uptick in hospitalizations. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey declared the state “on pause” as hospitals accelerate toward capacity, adding last week that the numbers “continue to go in the wrong direction.”
Ducey, who resisted virus-fighting restrictions other states imposed as early as March, has since empowered local officials in the southwestern state to require masks. But no statewide mandate has been issued.
Washington Post-Ipsos poll: Black Americans say racism, policing top issues for November
New polling confirmed racism and policing are the most important issues that Black Americans will consider when voting in the upcoming presidential election.
Though former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump among registered Black voters, 92% to 5%, he has not necessarily won over younger Black adults. Among Black Americans over the age of 40 who were polled, 87% said Biden is sympathetic to the problems of Black people. However, that number dropped to 66% when Black voters 40 and younger were asked the same question.
Whether Biden should select a Black woman as his running mate, however, is a more polarizing question: 50% of those polled said it was very or fairly important, while 49% said it was not.
