BRENTWOOD — A Berkeley man died Monday night after he was struck by two cars while lying underneath a gray-and-black sleeping bag in the middle of a city boulevard, authorities said.
The driver of one of the cars stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, according to police. The other vehicle continued on, and police said they are looking for the driver. In a statement July 14, police described that vehicle as a dark older-model four-door Honda Accord that likely suffered damage to its front bumper, hood, driver-side mirror and windshield.
The collisions happened around 10:15 p.m. on Brentwood Boulevard, just south of Harvest Park Drive.
Authorities identified the man under the sleeping bag as 63-year-old Timothy Faulk.
According to police, a Brentwood man driving south slowed down after seeing what appeared to be a dark-colored tarp in the lane second from the far left but ultimately couldn’t avoid it. The driver wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.
Another witness came forward at the scene and reported that a white or silver pickup truck also hit Faulk in his sleeping bag. That vehicle was the second one to hit Faulk, police said, and it continued going south on Brentwood Boulevard. Police are looking for the truck and the driver.
Police spokesman Michael Thompson said police are unsure why Faulk was under the sleeping bag in the middle of the road.
“We are still very early into the investigation,” he said.
The fatality shut down southbound Brentwood Boulevard for five hours.
Police are asking anyone who may have had contact with Faulk or who may have seen a white or silver truck on Brentwood Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. to call the department at 925-634-6911, or Brentwood police Det. Jeff Agostinho at 925-809-7870 or Traffic Safety Officer Matt King at 925-809-7795.
