2024 ALAMEDA WALKS

Lace up your walking shoes, gather your family, friends and neighbors and join us on an hour-long walk on designated Saturday mornings of each month, May through October!

Whether you are new to Alameda or lived here for decades, this is a great way to begin a Saturday morning exploring our neighborhoods and discovering new areas of Alameda.  Pre-registration is not necessary for Alameda Walks.

All walks begin at 9:00 a.m. and last approximately one hour.  Where walks are longer, it will be noted and new walks are indicated.

Look for the red Alameda Walks hats!  While we love the furry pets, we prefer that they wait for you at home.

Have you ever wondered what's the difference between Bay Farm and Harbor Bay? During this walk, we'll answer this question as we stroll along a lagoon that Utah Construction created and the homes built on the "Uplands" as we return to Tillman Park, along Mccartney Road. There's so much more to this story than these two developments. Join us as we learn about missiles and oyster pirates, asparagus and farmers, Italians and Portuguese.

Dennis Evanosky will lead this walk.

EAST END OF ALAMEDA AND LINCOLN PARK WALK

MEETING LOCATION:  LINCOLN PARK, 1450 HIGH STREET - INSIDE THE HIGH STREET ENTRANCE WAY

This walk will explore the park history three families once called this space home.  R.R. Thompson, Alameda's Water King and namesake of Thompson Avenue (Christmas Tree Lane, if you please), was the last to build his spacious home here.  He had the fence along High Street and Liberty Avenue, where we'll enjoy an open-air museum featuring nothing but Craftsman-style homes.

Dennis Evanosky will lead this walk.

GOLD COAST NEIGHBORHOOD WALK - *REVISITED*

MEETING LOCATION:  FRANKLIN PARK, 1432 SAN ANTONIO AVE - IN FRONT AREA ALONG SAN ANTONIO AVE

On this walk, we will explore and learn about how Franklin Park evolved from a private retreat to today's recreation park. Explore the Victorian Era at its finest: Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival-style homes all vie for our attention. A walk along San Antonio Avenue will bring us to the Tilden family's "Wedding Cake House". Listen carefully and you may hear echoes of the oversized 19th-century electric streetcar rumbling by us on the way to Webster Street.

VICTORIAN-ERA TREASURE & BAY EAGLE COMMUNITY GARDEN WALK

MEETING LOCATION:  IN FRONT OF THE BAY/EAGLE COMMUNITY GARDEN (EAGLE AVE & BAY ST)

This walk will discuss the trove of Victorian-era homes that line the streets near this delightful garden.  This neighborhood is an open-air museum dedicated almost exclusively to the Queen Anne-style creations of Felix Marcuse and Julius Remmel.  We will look further back into Alameda's history as we pass the sites of Nathaniel Page and Mary Fitch's mansions.  Though long gone, these homes remind us of two important Alameda families.  Mary Fitch named streets in her tract for the patron saint of her families (only St. Charles named for her husband and son remains).  Page Street reminds us of Nathaniel.  We'll see homes built in the "Page Tract" at the end of our walk.

Dennis Evanosky will lead this walk.

WEST END & LONGFELLOW PARK WALK

Dennis Evanosky will lead this walk.
