ANTIOCH — An off-duty deputy driving a car with a woman fired a shot at another man whom police say targeted them in a road-rage incident late Tuesday.

The shooting happened near the 4200 block of Lone Tree Way, near Country Hills Drive, around 9:55 p.m., Antioch police Sgt. John Fortner said. The woman moments earlier called 911 to report that another car was chasing them and repeatedly running into their vehicle, Fortner said.

When the two vehicles stopped, the suspect got out of his car armed with a tire jack, Fortner said. The deputy then fired a pistol at him, hitting him once, Fortner said.

The suspect fled the area, while the deputy and his passenger waited for police. The early investigation indicated the road rage appears to have stemmed from an earlier domestic incident, Fortner said.

Police later contacted the suspect in a different, unspecified part of the city, Fortner said. An ambulance took him to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound that wasn’t life-threatening, Fortner said, and police then arrested him and booked him into the County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and other unspecified charges.

They did not identify him immediately.

The deputy and his female passenger both were OK physically. Police did not specify the agency for which the deputy works but said it is not in Contra Costa County.
