Authorities on Wednesday were seeking witnesses to a hit-and-run at the northbound Lucas Valley Road offramp on Highway 101 in San Rafael that left a San Francisco man dead Tuesday night.

“We do not have a suspect or a suspect vehicle,” said Officer Kevin Giannone of the California Highway Patrol. “We’re asking for anybody to call us if they saw it or if they have any information that could be helpful to us.”

The victim, whose name was not released late Wednesday pending notification of next of kin, was in his 60s and was believed to have been walking either toward or away from the bus stop along the off-ramp.

CHP officers were notified at 8:35 p.m. that there was a body was near the bus stop along the off-ramp lane.

Despite efforts by paramedics, the man was pronounced dead a short time later.

The man’s injuries were consistent with a vehicle strike. However, there were no vehicles stopped in the area, the CHP reported.

The man was believed to have been crossing the offramp but was “very far” from the pedestrian pathway, officials said. He was said to be in an area where people are not permitted to cross on foot.

Authorities asked anybody who saw the collision, or who may have information that would lead to the responsible party, to call the CHP at 707-551-4100 at any time or 415-924-1100 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The offramp was closed during the investigation. It was reopened before midnight Tuesday.
