Remember when we all thought the 49ers swindled the Chicago Bears in a trade on draft night? We’ve just seen evidence that perhaps the Bears didn’t pay too much to move up one spot to draft quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
The proof consists only of one half of one preseason game, but Trubisky’s eye-popping pro debut Thursday night convinced many Bears fans he’s their savior.
The rookie from North Carolina had a dazzling performance in a 24-17 loss to Denver, going 18-of-25 for 166 yards and one touchdown, and running three times for 38 yards. All the while, Trubisky demonstrated poise, excellent decision-making and the ability to make big plays.
He certainly looked like a better option in Chicago than presumed starter Mike Glennon (2-of-8, 20 yards, one interception) or Mark Sanchez (1-of-4, 4 yards). Just ask a Chicago columnist.

The Bears were roasted for trading four picks to the 49ers in order to move from No. 3 to No. 2. Chicago, though, was willing to pay the price because it feared the 49ers would trade the pick to someone else, who would pick Trubisky.
Yes, it’s just one preseason performance against many guys who won’t even be on NFL rosters in September. But even NFL pundits are admitting perhaps the Bears knew what they were doing on draft day.

Who knows if the Mitch Magic will continue? But, if it does, the 49ers will get an up-close look at what all the fuss is about when they play the Bears in Chicago on Dec. 3.
