SAN JOSE — Guests at the Extended Stay America motel in South San Jose received a scare Monday morning after someone released a “pepper spray-like substance” near the lobby door.

One person was treated and released at the scene, according to San Jose fire Capt. Brad Cloutier.

At 4:45 a.m., firefighters responded to the motel, located on San Ignacio Avenue near Bernal Road, on an odor investigation, Cloutier said. The fire department’s Hazmat team was sent to investigate the cause and determined a “pepper spray-like substance” was discharged.

During the response, 29 people were evacuated and 22 others were sheltered-in-place.

The situation was considered under control at 6:19 a.m., and guests have since been allowed back into their rooms, Cloutier said. However, the motel’s main lobby will remain shut down until it is professionally cleaned.
