Raise your hand if you saw this coming. Last week, President Donald Trump accepted an invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a face-to-face meeting. The invitation was delivered to the White House by a South Korean official, Chung Eui-yong. And that meeting could come before long: According to the Washington Post, Chung said that Kim “expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible. President Trump said he would meet Kim Jong Un by May.”

The meeting has taken many by surprise. The two leaders have had, up until recently, a contentious relationship. According to the Post: “A meeting would be a huge step between the two countries, avowed enemies for 70 years, and particularly between two leaders who have taken delight in insulting each other over the past year. Trump has mocked Kim as ‘little rocket man’ while the North Korean leader has called the American president a ‘dotard’ and a ‘lunatic.'”

One analysis argues that Kim’s request is an attempt to bring legitimacy. “He wants to be treated as an equal by the global superpower, and a photo opportunity with the most powerful leader in the free world would go a long way to helping him achieve that,” says the Post analysis.
