RICHMOND — The 24-year-old Pinole man hit by gunfire in Thursday’s Interstate 80 shooting has died, CHP officials announced Sunday.

Demarcus Doss had been in grave condition after he and a woman were shot for an undisclosed motive by a man and two teenagers, authorities said. CHP officials said Sunday that they are recommending all three suspects face murder charges, but Contra Costa County prosecutors have not decided on any formal charges yet.

Doss died Friday in a hospital, according to the Contra Costa Coroner’s Office.

In a weekend Facebook post, Contra Costa College educator Paul DeBolt praised Doss’ love for his older sisters Shanyla Robinson and Kellis June Love Jr., who played in the school’s women’s basketball program. DeBolt said Doss was a regular at practices and games during the 2009-2013 seasons.

“It is also important that everyone knows DeMarcus was a (Pinole Valley High School) graduate, a college student, seeking to make a great future for himself and his family,” DeBolt said. “He loved his family and friends, God and basketball. He was respectful, smart and courageous. If you pray, please lift up Shanyla, Kellis and their friends and family. Or shower them with loving acts, thoughts or condolences.”

A GoFundMe account set up to defray family funeral expenses had garnered $7,142 late Sunday.

Elliot Johnhenry Johnson, 24, of Richmond, and the two juvenile suspects — both 17-year-old males — were arrested shortly after the incident Thursday afternoon in eastbound lanes of the busy freeway near the San Pablo exit. One of the teens was the shooter, a CHP spokesman said.

Both victims, who were driving in a Honda Odyssey, were rushed to the hospital, however only an unnamed 24-year-old San Pablo woman has survived. She is in stable condition.

Investigators have said witnesses on the busy freeway helped find the suspects. The incident was one of several freeway shootings that have occurred in the Bay Area since 2015, many proving to be gang-related, officials have said.

Investigators have said Johnson has an extensive criminal history. A mug shot provided by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office shows a tattoo on his neck saying, among other inscriptions, “Flat Line.”
