Barbra Streisand became a style icon in "Funny Girl," so why did she wear this sheer pantsuit to accept her Best Actress Oscar in 1969?

In the 1980s, one-time singer Cher began to get notice for her acting, winning a supporting actress nomination in 1984 for "Silkwood." But when she wasn't nominated for her first leading role in "Mask," she decided to show up at the 1986 Academy Awards in a tarantula-like costume to show her "scorn" for the system. Geena Davis showed up at the 1992 Academy Awards in this: Either she was looking like she was about to do the can-can in a low-cut bustier dress with a giant ruffled train. Or she's a bride missing the bottom of her gown.

French actress Juliette Binoche thought a lot of velvet would make a statement when she went to the 1997 Oscars, where she won for best supporting actress for her role in "The English Patient." Really, this much velvet shouldn't be allowed in a single outfit. (KIM KULISH/AFP/Getty Images)

Demi Moore decided to try her hand at fashion design for the Oscars in 1989. She should stick to acting: This bizarre ensemble came with a floral bustle, lace-trimmed bike shorts and a very low neckline.

For some reason, Kim Basinger didn't learn an important lesson from Demi Moore's red carpet disaster the year before. Her own design for the 1990 Oscars consisted of a half-dress/half-jacket look that also came with a missing shoulder and an extra-long glove.

Gwyenth Paltrow did a lot of weeping at the 1999 Oscars as she received the Best Actress for her role in "Shakespeare in Love." She seemed eager to go for Grace Kelly elegance and sophistication but the poorly fitting gown looked more like a prom dress -- minus the corsage. (TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP/Getty Images)

Before the “Twilight” books, there was Anne Rice’s “Interview With a Vampire” series. And, there was Angelina Jolie. In 2000, Jolie was in her goth ingenue phase and wore a long black dress and long black hair to accept her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Girl, Interrupted.” She also made headlines that night for kissing her brother passionately on the mouth and proclaiming in her acceptance speech how much “in love” she was with him. Meryl Streep certainly isn't "overrated" as an actress, as President Donald Trump says -- not when she's picking up her third Academy Award for acting at the 2012 celebration. But did she have to go the Oscars dressed as, well, an Oscar? By the way, overrated Streep is nominated this year for the 20th time. (ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Images)
