MORAGA — A balloon, streamers and a hand-lettered sign with the words “Happy 1st Birthday” have been posted at the site of sinkhole that formed a year ago at a major town intersection.

The sign was posted on the chain link fence behind an orange safety barrier surrounding the sinkhole at the intersection of Rheem Boulevard and Center Street in Moraga. The large sinkhole formed March 13, 2016, after a series of El Niño-related storms.

The town approved a $3.3 million fix to the sinkhole last May. It delayed repairs following some hiccups in the federal aid funding approval process, but town staffers expect to have a permanent fix by the summer.
