UNION CITY — A 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the gunpoint robbery of a Girl Scout cookie stand, police said Wednesday.
After an ongoing investigation, the teen was arrested at James Logan High School without incident and booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of two counts of robbery after confessing to detectives who interviewed him Wednesday, police said.
Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. Feb. 8 to a report of an armed robbery in front of Safeway at 1790 Decoto Road. A mother and her 12-year-old daughter were selling cookies from a booth when a teenage boy approached them about buying cookies.
When the boy returned later, he revealed a handgun and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the mother before fleeing through the parking lot, police said.
Though unhurt, the mother and daughter were upset, and investigating officers visibly moved by the incident bought as many cookies as they could to help cover the loss. Combined with donations from the Union City Police Officer Association, more than $1,000 was raised, police said.
The suspect, whose name was withheld due to his age, was also linked to a robbery at the high school, police said.
