Horror fans are excited about “It,” the new film based on the novel by Stephen King that just opened at theaters. Get ready for the chills by reading our list (composed before seeing the new “It”) of the top 6 clown horror movies ever made.
Pennywise (“It”): You really don’t want to be a kid in Derry, Maine, when this dancing, demonic clown comes to town (which occurs every 27 years). Definitely one of Stephen King’s more memorable characters, menacingly played by Tim Curry (“Rocky Horror Picture Show”) in the 1990 movie.
The Joker (“Batman” series): Jack Nicholson did a great job as Batman’s main nemesis in Tim Burton’s “Batman” (1989). Yet, nothing top Heath Ledger’s haunting portrayal in 2008’s “The Dark Knight.”
Captain Spalding (“House of 1000 Corpses,” “The Devil’s Rejects”): Just pray that you don’t have to stop to refuel as you’re passing by Spalding’s out-of-the-way gas station. Interactions with this clown character can be quite bad – see these two fantastic Rob Zombie films for details.
Clown from “Poltergeist”: The clown toy in the kids’ room? Yeah, that was freaky enough even before it attacked young Robbie in Tobe Hooper’s great 1982 film.
“Killer Klowns from Outer Space”: They may look like clowns, but they are actually aliens seeking to capture humans and harvest them for food. This 1988 film was filmed in Watsonville and Santa Cruz.
Twisty the Clown (“American Horror Story: Freak Show”): OK, so this one hails from the small screen. But you wouldn’t want us to skip the most monstrous clown of the last 10 years, would you? Maybe, you would – since any contact with Twisty can prove quite detrimental to your health.
