JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Raiders got their long road trip to Florida started the right way, crushing a woeful Jacksonville Jaguars team 33-16 Sunday at EverBank Field.
The Raiders (5-2) guaranteed that they’ll remain at least in a tie for first place, pending the Denver Broncos game on Monday, and improved to 4-0 on the road for the first time since 2000.
Oakland’s defense, worst in the league by far entering the week, found a nice cure in facing Jacksonville (2-4), which couldn’t maintain the momentum from a 17-point fourth quarter in last week’s comeback win over the Chicago Bears. The Raiders allowed a season-low 344 yards, an even 100 yards less than their season average.
Derek Carr didn’t have the smoothest day, completing 23 of 37 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown. But he wasn’t sacked and didn’t have at turnover and the Raiders offense inflicted all the damage they needed to.
KEY MOMENTS
— The Jaguars got within 10 points on a Julius Thomas touchdown with 4:12 to play, but Oakland recovered the onside kick. The Raiders were going to have to punt on fourth-and-24, but a bad snap from Jon Condo went dribbling toward punter Marquette King, who had no choice but to field the bouncer and go around the right side, where he found open space and raced 27 yards to covert for a first down on fourth-and-24. The Raiders turned that good fortune into points with Latavius Murray’s second rushing touchdown of the game that made it 33-16.
— The Raiders offense scuffled coming out of intermission with a pair of punts, but the defense gave them a spark. With Reggie Nelson blitzing on the outside, Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles stepped up into the pocket where there was no escaping the awaiting arms of Khalil Mack. His third sack of the season — which now has him in the team lead — forced a Jaguars punt and helped the Raiders take over at the Jacksonville 37-yard line. The offense stalled, but at least was able to get a 44-yard field goal from Sebastian Janikowski to make it 23-9.
— Late in the second quarter, Carr was scrambling on a third-and-5 play and it looked like he had space to run for the first down. But instead, he slung the ball down the field to Michael Crabtree, who used perfect positioning against Jaguars cornerback Prince Amukamara to haul in a 56-yard pass that set the Raiders up at the 2-yard line. After two incompletions, Carr again looked Crabtree’s way on third down and hit him on a slant for a 2-yard touchdown that made it 20-6 with 11 seconds left in the half.
— The Raiders took a 3-0 lead with a Janikowski field goal on their second drive, then saw the Jaguars zip down the field and reach the red zone. But on third down from the Raiders’ 18, Blake Bortles made a horrible decision to try to throw into triple coverage and David Amerson intercepted it in the end zone and that killed Jacksonville’s best chance to pull even or take a lead in this game.
IMPACT PLAYERS
— Raiders WR Michael Crabtree: Crabtree continues to be Carr’s go-to guy. He had eight catches for 96 yards and a touchdown and his 56-yard grab late in the first half put the Raiders in full control.
— Raiders K Sebastian Janikowski: The Raiders didn’t find the end zone as much as they would’ve liked, but didn’t need to against the Jaguars. The veteran kicker was money, making all four of his field goal attempts, including a long of 52 yards.
— Raiders RB Latavius Murray: Murray returned after sitting out the past two games with turf toe and had 59 yards on 18 carries and found the end zone twice.
— Raiders P Marquette King: He had a great game punting, averaging 54.6 yards per kick with four of the five getting downed inside the 20. But the play that won’t soon be forgotten came when Jon Condo had a rare bad snap.
