SAN JOSE — Valley Christian put itself in position to clinch an outright West Catholic Athletic League championship, beating St. Ignatius 28-0 on Friday night to remain undefeated.

If the Warriors prevail next week at St. Francis, they will be just a win over 2-6 Sacred Heart Cathedral from a perfect regular season.

If St. Francis wins, it is possible the league race will end in a tie at the top between Valley Christian, St. Francis and possibly Serra.

Isaiah Rodriguez scored on runs of 55, 6 and 2 yards Friday to lead Valley Christian, which was reminded by its coach, Mike Machado, after last week’s win over Bellarmine that St. Ignatius would come out ready to play.

The Wildcats (3-5, 1-4) trailed 6-0 after one quarter and just 14-0 through three quarters. But Valley Christian (8-0, 5-0), on its Senior Night, put away St. Ignatius with two more touchdowns in the final quarter.

Rodriguez finished with 189 yards in 18 carries. Javon Sturns added 115 yards and a touchdown in 22 attempts.

St. Francis stayed a game back with a 35-7 victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco. Serra will try to do the same Saturday with a win at Archbishop Mitty.

After playing St. Francis, Valley Christian closes out league play against Sacred Heart Cathedral.
