SAN MATEO — A 31-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday night near Hillsdale Shopping Center, according to police.

Two suspects, meanwhile, were detained following a high-speed chase that ended in San Francisco.

The shooting was reported just before 7 p.m. near 36th Avenue and Colegrove Street. Responding officers found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol pursued a suspect vehicle north on Interstate 280 to Interstate 380 and then north on Highway 101 into San Francisco, hitting speeds of about 80 mph, said San Mateo police Sgt. Rick Decker. The driver and a passenger were finally arrested at Octavia and Market streets.

No other suspects are being sought in the shooting, which police said appears to be an isolated incident and not random.

The last homicide in San Mateo occurred in July 2015.

“Thankfully incidents like this are rare and when they do occur, we are always grateful that our community is so willing to get involved, as is the case tonight when we had multiple callers who reported it immediately,” Decker said. “This allowed us to respond quickly and enabled our officers to locate and arrest the suspects within minutes.”
