SAN JOSE — Authorities have identified a 22-year-old Oakland man as the victim of a deadly stabbing early Sunday near South Second and Martha streets, police said.

Eric Christopher Hampton was attacked around 1:45 a.m. that morning, according to San Jose police. Responding officers found Hampton suffering from at least one stab wound, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neither a motive nor any suspect information has been released to the public.

Neighborhood surveillance cameras do not appear to have recorded the stabbing itself but did capture images of a man seen staggering down the sidewalk, a female acquaintance flagging down a passing car, and two pedestrians heading toward the scene.

The death marked the city’s 28th homicide of the year, putting the city on pace for its highest total in 25 years. There were 15 homicides at the same point in 2015, which ultimately saw 30 homicides, which represented a five-year low.

Anyone with information about the case can contact the SJPD homicide unit at 408-277-5283 or leave a tip with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-STOP (7867) or with svcrimestoppers.org.
