Dredging of Easternmost Corners of Lagoons 3 and 5

Published on July 16, 2020

Dredging of the easternmost corners of Lagoons 3 and 5 of the Alameda South Shore Lagoon System is planned to begin Wednesday, August 26, 2020 and be completed by Tuesday, September 22, 2020. Construction work hours are from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There will be no work on Labor Day, Monday, September 7. Dredging will consist of sediment removal from the two lagoon corners, off-loading into trucks, and hauling to a licensed disposal facility, and will be done while the lagoons have been drained for their annual maintenance.

Work locations:

  • Lagoon 3: The easternmost corner nearest Scout Park (nearest the intersection of Powell and Oak Streets). Note: Work and staging will be done from Otis Drive. Powell and Oak Streets will not be impacted.

  • Lagoon 5: The easternmost corner at the intersection of Waterton and Court Streets. Staging will be along Waterton Street and on Court Street next to the work area.

The City will provide notice to nearby residents several weeks prior to the contractor mobilizing. The contractor will provide advanced notice to nearby residents and place “No Parking” signs 72-hours in advance of when the work will begin and parking restrictions will become effective.

Residents may experience minor disruptions in traffic, temporary loss of on-street parking, experience in noise levels, and dust during construction, however, sewer and water service will not be interrupted. The City will make every effort to minimize disruptions.

Note: the northern sidewalk along Otis Drive (between Park Street and South Shore Center entrance signalized intersection) will be closed for the duration of the work at Lagoon 3. Signage will direct pedestrians around the work area (apartments along this stretch of sidewalk will still be accessible to residents).

Mound, Waterton, and Court Streets will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the work at Lagoon 5.

The City appreciates your cooperation and patience, and apologizes in advance for any inconvenience this project may cause. Questions or information regarding the project should be directed to John Tallitsch, Construction Inspector, at 510-747-7946 or jtallitsch@alamedaca.gov.
