PACIFICA — A man died Tuesday after he and a female companion tripped and fell into the ocean while walking on the Pacifica Pier, authorities said.

The couple was walking at the end of the pier around 2 p.m. when they ended up in the water, said Lt. Marcia Medina of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The woman made it back to the beach, but the man was swept out to sea, said Clyde Preston, a spokesman for the North County Fire Authority, which serves Brisbane, Daly City and Pacifica.

Around 3:15 p.m., a rescue swimmer with the U.S. Coast Guard pulled the man from the ocean, said Medina, adding that he was given CPR.

The couple was taken to Seton Medical Center in Daly City, Preston said. An update on the woman’s condition was not available Tuesday night, but the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office reported that the man had died. He was identified as Larry Moore, 60, of Pacifica.

A beach hazard advisory was in effect for the area Tuesday, said Carolina Walbrun, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Swells of 7 to 8 feet were expected every 13 to 15 seconds.

The conditions are typical for this time of year, but the service issued the advisory because of an influx of visitors to the Bay Area for Super Bowl 50 and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

“There are a lot of people who aren’t accustomed to the conditions on the coast,” Walbrun said. “It’s not Lake Michigan.”
