The Saint Mary’s College men’s golf team posted a record-setting performance to win its second consecutive tournament Tuesday and claimed both the team title and medalist honors at the Nick Watney Invitational at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club in Fresno.

The Gaels set a program-low score for 54 holes with rounds of 283-270-272 for a 27-under-par total 825. The Gaels led after each round. The host Bulldogs finished runner-up at 19 under, two strokes ahead of Cal and four in front of fourth-place Sacramento State.

Saint Mary’s sophomore Pavan Sagoo earned medalist honors by setting the school 54-hole record at 16-under 197. Sagoo carded his two lowest competitive scores en route to his first college title. He posted rounds of 68-64-65 for a 197, which bettered the previous school record of 202 set by Robert McRae in 2009. Sagoo also recorded two of the three lowest single-round scores in program history.

Including Sagoo’s medalist performance, senior Jonathan De Los Reyes and sophomore Connor Blick finished tied for 15th place at 3-under 210.

  • Santa Clara’s Hayden Shieh took first and teammate Tyler Kertson placed second at the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico. Shieh, a sophomore from Mission San Jose High, finished at 9-under 207 after rounds of 69-70-68, two strokes ahead of Kertson. The Broncos were 5 over par as a team to tie for fourth.

  • The Stanford men (834) finished tied for fourth, 11 strokes behind champion Wake Forest, at the Nike Golf Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Oregon. Maverick McNealy tied for fifth at 9-under 206, nine shots behind Texas’ Beau Hossler.

    Akron (8-2) beat visiting Santa Clara (5-6) 2-0 in Toledo, Ohio, on goals by Richie Akr Larea.

    Liberty High defensive back Shurod Thompson announced via Twitter on Monday night that he orally committed to Oregon State after originally picking Cal. Thompson, who transferred from Pittsburg for his senior year, is rated as a four-star safety by Rivals.com, which also ranks him as the No. 2 safety in California and No. 9 nationally for the 2016 class. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder had offers from Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, and Cal, among others, according to ESPN.com. On Saturday, Pittsburg cornerback Jordan Parker, rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, committed to Oklahoma.
