SANTA CLARA — Mayor Jamie Matthews has announced he is retiring, just one day after his city hosted Super Bowl 50.

“It’s time to take a breath and see what the next chapter is for me,” Matthews said at a post-Super Bowl press conference.

Matthews, who has two years remaining in his term, is retiring effective Tuesday. He cited desire to spend more time with his family and said health issues are not a factor in his decision.

Matthews said he has held up during the planning for Super Bowl 50 and is looking to slow down in general.
