The city of Sausalito has promoted John Rohrbacher from police captain to chief of the department.

Rohrbacher, 61, was hired as a captain in 2009 after about three years as an investigator at the Marin County District Attorney’s Office. Before that, he spent about 27 years at the San Rafael Police Department, departing in 2006 after a 15-month term as police chief.

“I am very pleased to have someone as experienced as Chief Rohrbacher, with his exceptional leadership skills, take the helm of the Sausalito Police Department,” City Manager Adam Politzer said in an email Monday. “Chief Rohrbacher has the support of 100% of the men and women who serve the Department and is well respected by his peers in the County.”

Rohrbacher’s annual salary will be $171,504. He also has an annual pension of nearly $130,000 from the Marin County Employees’ Retirement Association, said Jeff Wickman, association administrator. That pension covers Rohrbacher’s career at the prosecutor’s office and the San Rafael Police Department.

The Sausalito Police Department is in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, or CalPERS. Rohrbacher is already eligible for a separate CalPERS pension because he is 50 or older and has worked in the system more than five years. The promotion to chief will increase his second pension.

Rohrbacher replaces Scott Paulin, an interim chief hired after the departure of Jennifer Tejada. She left for the Emeryville Police Department last summer.

Rohrbacher’s promotion was one of several announced by the department. William Fraass, a 20-year veteran, and Stacie Gregory, who started in 1997, were elevated from sergeant to lieutenant. Jason McConnehey and Brandon Rodgers were named sergeant and Brian Mather was named corporal.

The Sausalito Police Department has about two dozen employees and annual budget of about $5 million.
