Hertz Foundation names 2015 fellowship winners

The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation recently announced the 12 recipients of its prestigious Hertz Fellowship, awarded annually to support up to five years of graduate study in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences.

The 2015 awardees are: Katie Bodner for bioengineering, synthetic and systems biology; Jordan Cotler for theoretical physics; Cole Graham for mathematics, analysis and PDE theory. Bodner, Cotler and Graham are all undergraduates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and will pursue their doctorates at Stanford University.

Other fellowship recipients are Adam Jermyn, of the California Institute of Technology, for biophysics; Ben Mildenhall, of Stanford, for computer science and graphics; Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski, of Harvard University, for high-energy physics; Maxim Rabinovich, of UC Berkeley, for computer science; Ben Shababo, of UC Berkeley, for systems and computational neuroscience; Ravi Sheth, of Rice University, for bioengineering and synthetic biology; Alexander Siegenfeld, of MIT, for physics and condensed-matter theory; Charles Tschirhart, of the California Institute of Technology, for physics, experimental condensed matter; and Katherine Xue, of the University of Washington, for biology and genome sciences. Mildenhall, Rabinovich and Shababo will continue their doctoral programs at UC Berkeley.

Each Hertz fellowship includes financial, mentoring and community support, a stipend and full tuition valued at more than $250,000, as well as research freedom at a participating graduate institution in the United States.

Las Positas ESL program will host an open house

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Las Positas College will host an open house May 8.

The free event, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., provides an opportunity to learn about the community college’s ESL program, find out how to get started at Las Positas, tour the campus, visit an ESL class, and meet Las Positas students. It is open to all individuals interested in improving their English, visiting the campus or learning about new career opportunities.

Blood drive to be May 8

The city and American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 8 at the Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center, 4455 Black Ave.

To schedule an appointment, go to www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code Pleasanton925. The American Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and provides blood for patients in some 2,700 hospitals across the nation.
