Cain’s shaky start may force the issue on Giants acquiring another starter if they have any hope of repeating

No opuses tonight with a day game Wednesday and not much action in Tuesday night’s 5-2 comedown against the Brewskies. What can be said is this: Upon seeing Matt Cain labor through another uncertain start, the Giants won’t be winning back-to-back World Series — and might not even make the playoffs — unless they can come up with another arm in the rotation over the next 2 1/2 days before the trade deadline.

The Giants just don’t have enough with a 10-game road trip and a brutal August schedule looming. Had Cain pitched well for a second straight start and shown that he might slot in as a reliable No. 2 behind Madison Bumgarner, maybe they could have rolled the dice with a Bum/Cain/Heston/Peavy foursome and filled in at No. 5 with either Hudson or Vogelsong through the rest of the regular season.

But it’s obvious now that while Bumgarner is a solid No. 1, you don’t want a 27-year-old rookie as your No. 2 if your plan is to go deep into October, and that’s what Heston is right now. He’s pitched great, but that’s too much to put on the young man’s shoulders. Cain or Peavy could potentially do it, but there haven’t been enough optimistic signs, and time is of the essence with a Friday 1 p.m. trade deadline.

Speaking of putting pressure on a young guy, what the Giants face over the next few days is a lot to put on the shoulders of new G.M. Bobby Evans, who from all we gather, is calling the shots. Brian Sabean would surely advise, and ownership would certainly weigh in on any prospective deal, but it’s Evans job not only to find a deal, but find and consummate the right deal.

Fans, of course, want a front-line starter but don’t want to mortgage the future with the trade of someone like Andrew Susac or Tyler Beede. Sorry, it’s not going to happen then. You’re not getting Cole Hamels or James Shields — or even Mike Leake — for someone like Adam Duvall. Unless the Giants decide they don’t want to make that kind of sacrifice and make a run at a mid-level guy such as … don’t laugh … Mat Latos, they will have to pay the price, both in salary and prospects.

Quite frankly, if the package can be made, go all the way and try for Hamels. It sounds from the Rosenthal/Heyman/Stark rumor mill that they could be doing just that. Longshot, but it makes sense. Get the best if you can. You keep him out of L.A., and he’s not a rental. He’s a guy who could prospectively be here through 2019, by which time he’d only be 35.

With Shields, you have to legitimately be concerned whether he’s worth it. He’s been just so-so with San Diego, but maybe in the Giants’ environment, they could resurrect what he was in Kansas City last season. If they go the Shields route, though, no doubt it’s a greater risk.

As for the other front-line potential rentals, David Price and Jeff Samardzija, it’s unclear whether their clubs are even willing to trade them right now as they remain on the fringe of contention. The same goes for Jordan Zimmerman. But there are plenty of others who, under the right circumstances, might be a good fit in San Francisco — Yovani Gallardo, Doug Fister, Dan Haren, maybe an Andrew Cashner if he’s available, and yes, even the hated Giants-hating Latos. Wouldn’t that be something, to see that guy have to slip on Giants gear? I’m certainly not advocating it, but if everything else comes up dry …

There are other concerns for the Giants, such as a more seasoned backup infielder than Ehire Adrianza and perhaps another outfielder as insurance for the health-challenged Angel Pagan. But the Giants have shown in the past they can strike decent waiver deals after the deadline to acquire such players in a time of need. Not much chance they could come up with a guy like Gerardo Parra, who has looked awesome against the Giants the past two nights. But who knows? The Giants are playing their cards very close to the vest right now, and they’ve successfully gone out of the box on folks like Cody Ross and Marco Scutaro and even Peavy.

But a front-line starter? Not a chance for that on a waiver deal. That has to be done now. It’s going to be an edgy next three days, seeing what magic the Giants might be able to work. They have to work it unless they simply want to start projecting forward to 2016. Don’t rule that out, either, because there will be much pitching talent on the free agent market, and the Giants will have plenty of money to spend.

Stay close to your Twitter. Me, I’ve seen the weather report, and I’ll be stationed close to the air conditioner.

  1. Fans, of course, want a front-line starter but don’t want to mortgage the future with the trade of someone like Andrew Susac or Tyler Beede

Probably true Carl, lol. And here’s some walk-off music (since you didn’t have any) to express that fan sentiment! 🙂

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pm4fQRl72k

  2. If you’re going to gamble on a starter, might as well gamble on Cain coming around for the home stretch. Zobrist would have been a good addition, got picked up today. Maybe a reliever as Affeldt and Romo are showing signs of wear. Try to deal Affeldt and bring Osich back!

  3. I don’t think Susac or Beede are the future. I think Susac is the most overrated new guy since Hector Sanchez. Remember when Sanchez was the Susac of his day?

  4. Far too early to tell for Susac but he should end up quite a bit better than Sanchez. Sanchez could never even get his OBP over .300. Still, if it meant landing Hamels or Leake I’d have no problems at all in trading Susac.

  5. “might as well gamble on Cain coming around for the home stretch.” lol surely you jest.

  6. Do you really think Latos is a better option? I would seriously consider retiring as a fan if that happened.

  7. Just watched the highlights from last night, Brewers highlights as well as our few and far between. I agree with Rob Deer’s observations (from last night’s blog) that Cain’s pitches looked much better in the fifth and sixth innings vs. early on. Seems that’s been a theme in a few of his starts after returning from injury. If he’s healthy, and can pitch to Posey, I think Righetti/Gardner can help him find early consistency.

I’ve come around to agree that we *probably* need another pitcher, but don’t want to give up a big group of our young prospects. As noted by many, there will be quite a few pitchers available this offseason.

A’s helped by beating the Dodgers. Peavy wins today, we take the series and finish the homestand 5-1. That’s pretty good, I think. GO GIANTS!!

  8. Latos is almost worth it just to see Dave Flemming interview him on his first day.

  9. Ahhhh c’mon Carl, the Giants are well positioned for the playoffs and all they have to do is get in. 2014 wasn’t that long ago. The Cubs are flagging (the Mets could get hot), the Dodgers are choking , you get the sense that the Giants can win the division and avoid that play-in game. Heston has been magical, why not continue his great run? When other teams’ bats go cold in October, the Giants sticks will be there with timely hits; the defense will be stout and Bochy and crew will out-baseball the competition. I’m just not so sure Giants fans are hoping for a repeat, they may be feeling it after this 12-2 run.

  10. Any fans thinking the Giants should just stand pat and ride it out are delusional, same boat as those that think Lincecum will get “fixed” and jump back into the starting 5.

Giants need Hamels now, not only for this year but for the next couple of years as they don’t have any realistic #2-3 types in the minors. Give up Beede, Susac and whomever because if they are “our future” we are already in trouble keeping this era moving forward.

That was going to be difficult anyways seeing how much they have whiffed starting pitching wise in the minors (no Heston is not enough to follow the MB, Cain, Lincecum trifecta we hit a few years back).

Cole would give the Giants a solid 3 with MB and Heston that you could then plug with a few mid level guys this winter and hope and pray any of the A / AA arms will be ready in 2-3 years, because right now no realistic prospects at the top level ready to go into the rotation in the next 2 years at the very least.

  11. so you think the pitching is on the level of last year, or will be by end of year? Really? And Heston in your mind is enough to push it that way? Doubt it footy. Amazing no one sees the degeneration overall in the staff, assume things stay at same performance level. Funny how that is not the way the gam works,

  12. there was some good hop on that fastball – he stranded that runner on third by inducing those pop ups – they weren’t able to square the ball up.

He still looks like a high mileage savvy vet out there- but capable of some quality starts and that’s all it takes with this offense.

  13. that is no reason to have to live and die by Cain. If the team can improve then it has to move on for the benefit of all. They can afford it. BTW……not your $$$

  14. Cain going nowhere. Finish this season as strong as he can, then begin a planned offseason regimen to strengthen his arm and rebuild stamina. Two more years guaranteed; he’s a competitor who will finish that contract on a high note.

  15. I like how you aren’t afraid to voice your opinion – Susac never game me the impression that he was the best player on the field in Fresno whereas Joe Panic did.

Beede’s results in SJ were great, but he did not give me goosebumps.

  16. It’s almost like the more you doubt on these guys, the better they perform.

  17. The pitching wasn’t that good last year, either. Bum was great, and Hudson had a good first half with Peavy having a good second half, but neither one of those guys had much in the tank for October. That was it. Lincecum had a few good starts in the middle, Cain was injured, Vogey was a #5. They didn’t even have Heston. You could argue their rotation is better this year than it was last year.

That said, it’s not good enough–not for now and not for October. They really need to catch the Dodgers. They need another starter.

  18. i like the mental take on it, only if the body followed suit all the time but sadly again….not the way it works

  19. The Morning Minor League Report…

    Dusten Knight 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K – 1.53 ERA (has to be longest pro outing)

    Visalia 2, San Jose 1

    C. Arroyo 1-4, K
    T. Horan 2-4, K
    Luis Ysla 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (has become a filthy K-machine!)
    Christian Jones 3.2 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K – 2.54 ERA (not a soft tossin’ lefty, great K rate)

    Altoona 3, Richmond 0 (3 hits)

Singles by Cole, Oropesa, and Slater.
    Kelvin Marte 7 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K – 2.27 ERA

    Las Vegas 14, Sacramento 2

Nothing to see here, except the Kelby Tomlinson and Juan Perez had 2 hits apiece.
Where did Mac Williamson go? Did he get detained in Canada for trying to smuggle?

*Nothing to see in Salem either, just 4 hits.

  20. on Q – thank you for the Broadway-esque bullpen relief ! 🙂

  21. Hamels would be awesome E! But be ready to part with Susac, Arroyo, Mella and another good prospect to have a chance of competing with other bids and that’s a lot to give up for a lot of risk.

  22. huge fan of Susac but i give him up for Hamels without hesitation – the only question is what pitcher(s) have to be bundled with him, and at least from the scouting reports I’m ok with Beede being part of it. but thankfully the decision will be made by lifelong baseball pros who’ve proven their judgment is sound.

  23. MLB.com updated their top prospect lists and it’s a pretty desultory effort if you ask me. They totally whiff on Chase Johnson and Johneshwy Fargas, and likely some others as well. Sure, they are probably about right on the Top 4, but after that, I think they were pulling names from a power ball machine.

    http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=sf

Their overall MLB Top 100 doesn’t even include any Giants – smh. Soon enough, John Sickels will have some updates with memos from scouts.

  24. I saw Mac playing last Thursday in Sac–he went 1-4. Other than a pinch-hit appearance the next game, he hasn’t played since. He’s not listed on the DL, either, but I assume he must have some minor injury.

Juan Perez also had two errors in the outfield. No good.

  25. or court appearances for those smuggling charges.

  26. Could be the Royals year anyway. They are primed !

  27. This Gs offense is pretty damn good with a shady pitching staff. The Gs mngnt knows all of this and it would drive them krazy going into the off season knowing they needed a #2 guy and whiffed on it. Therefore im absolutely positive that they’ll grab a Leak or a Shields type. No Hamels or Price are you kidding me, the Gs never shop for the Lamborghini or Bentleys their more of the E550 or Audi A8 type or org.

  28. a few, is 8 starts giving up 1 run or less a few .

  29. Great write up Carl, seemed to echo many thoughts of the GE faithful.

  30. Why is the asking price so absurdly high when there is so much money left on the contract? Albeit a reasonable contract on that but still, that is a lot of money for a team to eat?

  31. I said it last night and I will say it again I am not 100% certain the Giants will get Hamels or Price but I think they are closer than most of the “experts” are saying….I am thinking Leake, saradmajiza or shields

  32. Even though he is quite far away, where do you think Garcia could end up? Could he be as good as Susac down the line? Meaning a potential replacement for Posey if they move him to first (down the line people, down the line)

  33. Giants morning quiz, name these 2 Giants Pitchers , pre 2014 All Star game , Pitcher # 1 gave up 127 hits, 57 runs, and batters hit .261 vs him, Pitcher #2 gave up 97 hits, 47 runs, and hitters hit .230 vs him .

  34. Rumor is Phillies not looking at Giants final offer for Hamels because they are on his no-trade list.

  35. I posted this last night, and I liked it better than you did. Point taken about Johnson and Fargas, but I liked the depth and variety of the list–from promising youngsters like Fox and Miller to polished college guys like Suarez, Garcia, and Coonrod who could move quickly. I was especially fascinated by Coonrod rocketing into the top 10; he’s had a great year for sure, but usually a college guy buried in Augusta doesn’t get that much love. I was also happy to see Joe Biagini crack the list–go Ags!

The other thing I noticed was that former top-10 guys like Blach and Blackburn are now in the low 20s–and I don’t really see that as a diss on them but rather that the system has gotten deeper and better. Blach’s had a nice year in AAA and Blackburn’s coming along fine for a 22-year-old at that level. They both seem like guys who can crack a major league rotation at some point–the back end, but still.

  36. Yes, but Pitcher #2 only had a few good starts .

  37. Latest rumor: Source: Latos, Morse to Dodgers for prospects.

Sorry Carl, no Latos for the Giants. But Morse, how could you?

  38. I was talking back to the radio this morning listening to Krukow. First, he said it would be a good thing to get Juan Uribe back and have Duffy become the super utility guy to which I screamed, “What does Duffy have to do to win the 3B job?” I mean, he’s batting third in the lineup, hitting over .300 while playing every day, and the team is rolling. Then, Krukow says the Giants really need a veteran hitter on the bench for late-inning pinch hitting. I agree that that’s a good idea, but getting Juan Uribe to start at 3B is not going to put you any closer to that. He mentioned Duffy as a super utility guy two or three times. We have a rookie of the year-caliber player here who is comfortable and is raking. Can’t we all just admire what he is doing and count our blessings? This team has areas where it can improve, but third base is coming along just fine. Aye-yi-yi!

  39. Morse should just retire, rather than wear duckin’ Fodger blue.

  40. Heston has been better & more consistent than anyone other than MadBum from last year’s rotation.

But I guess you could say Hudson in the 1st half and Peavy down the stretch combined were a little better even than what Heston has given us this year.

  41. Latos & Morse to LA is apparently essentially a straight salary dump by the Marlins.

That a$$h0!e MIA owner strikes again – what a weasel and a snake.

  42. Of all those here who love Lincecum, Peter loves him the most.

  43. Of all those here who love Lincecum, Peter loves him the most.

  44. Luckily for Duffy, it’s Bochy, not Krukow, who gets to decide this–and Bochy clearly loves Duffy. I’d joke that Krukow’s mad about the rally-killing DP that Duffy hit last night, but I really think it’s that he didn’t like what he saw from Adrianza, and that, I get. But making your third-place hitter a super-utility guy is not the answer.

  46. Damn it’s gonna be tough seeing Morse in a Dodger uniform. Good move on LA part tho if it happens (Latos/Morse)

  48. Any chance the acquisition of Latos means the Dodgers don’t think they’re going to get Hamels?

  49. Any chance the acquisition of Latos means the Dodgers don’t think they’re going to get Hamels?

  50. OK, OK, simmer down, PJ. I miss him, too, but it is what it is.

  51. OK, OK, simmer down, PJ. I miss him, too, but it is what it is.

  52. It’s also Krukow’s veteran love over the rookies. I wouldn’t get my knickers in a twist about it – just Kruk being Kruk.

  53. But still so patently stupid I can’t help but be irked by it.

  54. Yep. Classy player for a classy organization – they deserve each other.

And how many times has Latos been dealt now in the past 3+ seasons? 3? 4?

  55. He grew up in SoCal, I believe – so that partially explains it.

But I guess he doesn’t really want to play for a winner.

  56. Seriously, PJ. Should we infer from your bluster that you’d actually want him in the rotation right now?

  57. That’s what just confounds me, particularly when it comes to pitchers. When you look at our success, our park, Bochy and Rags, you’d think guys would be falling all over themselves trying to get here. “Yeah but those damn seagulls show up in the 8th inning like clockwork.”

  58. Buster Posey approves this acquisition.

I guess this means no Hamels – or maybe not. Maybe it depends on who they had to send over for Latos.

Mike Morse pickup sure is strange. Don’t the Dodgers know that he loves Hunter Pence and the Giants. Seems like a secret agent to me !

  59. Yeah. He ain’t gonna get more than a couple starts at first and their outfield is log jammed. This trade makes me happy.

  60. Clayton Kershaw scratched from his start….traded to Giants, masterminded by Ned Colletti, who, during the corresponding press conference, rips off his shirt to reveal he is still wearing a Giants t-shirt underneath and runs out the room into a waiting helicopter piloted by Lou Seal.

    ; )

Welcome to the final 2 days before the trade deadline!

  61. Wow, as if we needed any more reason to boo Latos….

  62. Just look at Peavy in BOS last year vs. here – that should have opened some eyes if nothing else did.

  63. Take it from me, on the whole that list should be taken with a grain of salt. Too many instances of “???” to needlessly dissect. They didn’t put much effort into it.

But yeah, Coonrod is a good arm. He’s probably in the 10-20 range. Williamson should be higher, Crick lower, etc. It’s whatever.

  64. He’s an ace. Whatever is left on deal is below his open market value.

  65. It depends on his development. Sounds like he has a ways to go but is making good progress in A ball. Could be a 3B down the line too.

  66. Well, the “Kershaw scratched” part is true – bad hip/glute.

    Ah, that’s so, so sad.

  67. Yes, if healthy, like he was before June, he had the best ERA of Giants starters until his last 3 or 4 starts, started 3 shutouts, + 7 IP, 0 runs in another start, and 6 IP, and 1 run, in another start..

  68. He’s had a hip thing before, IIRC–missed a start against the Giants on an ESPN Sunday night game.

Or he’s just a pain in the a**.

  69. Bat off the bench, I guess. I read they’re shopping Guerrero, and he’s their RH power off the bench.

  70. “Veteran love” for a guy who plays for the Mets? smh

  71. I think they like to rest AGon vs. lefties as well.

maybe Guerrero is going to Philly…

  72. No. Krukow was rolling and they just let him go.

  73. Well, when you’re plugging in a bunch of new draftees that just signed five minutes ago, there’s a lot of imagination involved, anyway. But I was happy to see the progress of guys like Slater, Cole, and Biagini recognized.

  74. Kinda weird that he would say that because the Mets just got Uribe and they need bats. Unless the Mets are looking to flip Uribe with David Wright’s return on the horizon.

  75. …who also helped deliver at least one of our WS trophies – or did you forget?

  76. Mike Morse who? Time to start hating that man…. (PC folks, not true hate, calm down)
    Latos was already hated…
    GO GIANTS….

  77. The Mets should absolutely keep Uribe. They have no positional depth and Wright has serious injury issues. Plus Uribe is clutch, as he has shown several times just in the last week, including once since the trade to the Mets. I think I read he has 10 walk-off hits in his career, and I’m sure that doesn’t include his 2010 postseason game-winners. That’s a lot.

  78. I do not like people that think he was awful in all his starts the last 4 years, his problem is he is very good if not great in some starts, and awful in his other starts, not many in between . I also hate the Cain gets a pass by the press and fans, when since 2012 he has been just as bad if not worse, and makes more money, and is signed for longer. Cain’s stuff is very similar to Vogey’s stuff, but Vogey is on a 1 year 4 million dollar deal, low 90s fastball, fly ball pitcher, but both do not have a put away pitch with 2 strikes, when Timmy is on he does have put away pitches.

  79. As part of a package, maybe, sure. If I’m Philly, though, I want young, cheap prospects with a full six years of team control, not a 28-year-old who doesn’t really have a position, is already paid well above the league minimum, and only signed through 2017. Guerrero has a nice bat but can’t even break into the lineup of the team that signed him. He might be a nice auxiliary piece, but I doubt he’ll be the headliner of a package that gets Hamels. The Rangers can do better than that.

  80. I really think I’d take Leake over anyone right now. Would take less to get him and he’s throwing better than anyone. 9-5, 3.56 and 0.60 in his last 30 innings (2 runs). He’s already professed his love for SF growing up, signing him long term would seem like a definite. Plus, I love pitchers who can hit.

  81. I think Cain’s free pass is starting to expire. As you can tell by the tone of this write-up the Giants are eagerly seeking to bolster the rotation in large part because they know Cain is no longer reliable. While I’ll always hold Lincecum in high regards I disagree with you regarding his performance over the last four years, he’s had some good starts but overall he’s been bad and there’s no getting around that. However, I agree with you on Cain and I’m starting to get more nervous with him because unless he gets it going this year it will make three straight years of poor production/injuries.

  82. Philly would want to start with guys like DeLeon, Holmes, and Verdugo since they can’t get the top two. Guerrero could help sweeten a deal as no glove/power bat. We’ll see who they moved for Latos.

Rangers can mix and match with some very exciting pieces.

  83. but Guerrero also has a funky contract stipulation that needs to be worked around.

  84. I mean, it’s not crazy to say that the Giants need depth off the bench. Ehire Adrianza is trash, Maxwell caught fire for a while there but he’s regressed to his mean. They are severely limited when it comes to a pinch hitter that can have some success in a tight situation. I don’t agree with Krukow in moving Duffy off 3B to be a utility guy, that’s silly. I do see that we have a need and I think Krukow was just spitballing and like someone else mentioned below, he, like many of us, are frustrated when the Giants have a chance to score runs and keep the line moving and they get Maxwell or Adrianza to strike out or roll me up into a double play.

  85. I don’t think a Hamels to LA deal happens without Puig’s inclusion. Guerrero, DeLeon and Holmes I don’t think is enough.

  86. He’s on there. He should be considered as a Top 5 guy. It’s a sloppy list, pay no mind.

  87. Not strange at all, Marlins wanted to dump him for salary relief, and Dodgers can afford it, so did it to get Latos, they might even DFA Morse, if no space on 25 man roster .

  88. There you go. This may be in the works as we speak!

  89. Their is no excuse for the stupidity of that remark. It’s like Bill James proved time and time again, some people who have spent their lives in baseball don’t understand it.

  90. That’s what I’m afraid of…if it happens that would be a *nasty* rotation.

  91. Plus it can wear down the starters. When the bench is so thin Boch, rightfully so, doesn’t want to rest guys as much because the replacements are awful. A decent bench allows more much needed rest for the starters. Case in point with Panik’s back stiffening up a bit. Also Crawford has been incredible this year and he needs some breathers so he doesn’t fade too much down the stretch.

  92. Thanks Puff – I have no arguments with Mella as #1. I view him ahead of Beede at this point. I like stuff, I like Ks, I like the youth on his side. So long as injuries are behind him, he’s a go.

Now I just need to suck it up in spite of heat and head down to Visalia tongiht to scout Mella for myself – then do my best to write up a report 🙂

  93. Agree. Righetti and Gardner are major assets for pitchers. Leake would thrive here. Could be Vogey 2.0.

  94. Panik with back stiffness–he’s 20 something. Took me to my 60’s to get back stiffness.

  95. Maybe it’s as good as done. Come on down. Reds could certainly ask for Arroyo and Evans can balk…

  96. It looked pretty nasty at the beginning of the year before injuries took big bites from it. Your fears are legitimate

  97. He wasn’t on the list Lefty posted last night. Are there 2 lists now?

  98. Yep. Including his Reds Suck blast after they moved him. What a tool.

  99. As if I needed any more reason to dislike Mat Latos, being a Dodger completes the cycle with a homerun

  100. And, for at least the next two months , we would have The Three Chiquito’s in Leake, Timmy and Romo. Tiniest staff in the league by far

  101. Leake’s numbers aren’t very good, either, b/c of that CIN bandbox (but he’s been great on the road) – so his price tag shouldn’t be that high.

  102. …and who beat LA singlehandedly recently, three times!

  103. there’s a preseason list and this midseason update. The preseason lists are usually pretty good, better thought out.

I see Mejia at #13 here. Whatever, he’s a good left handed pitching prospect with good velo and a good changeup. Maybe he heads to Cincy for Leake.

  104. I don’t really see how adding Mat Latos makes the Dodgers any better at all. He’s not much different that any of the other starting pitchers they’ve had this year, except that the Giants have a strong history in big games against him.

  105. Hey..just read about the theft…SO SORRY. Wow.

Hope everyhting ends up working out with the loss/insurance/etc….

Again, tough deal, undeserved…and frustrating as hell, I’m sure.

  106. I think 9-5, 3.56 is very good even if you don’t factor in the bandbox.

  107. Maybe that’s his value: the Dodgers needed somebody besides Kershaw to choke in big games. 😉

  108. Just makes it that much easier for your bear to catch him now.

  109. Some of us get hit early. I’m 66, got a chainsaw stick in an oak tree when I was about 25, that was the beginning of a life of back pain. A few years later I cracked my tailbone at my daughter’s 5 birthday roller skating party, ouch that never really goes away. Sure it gets better in your 20s, 30s, you bounce back, mostly. But I can imagine with a pro athlete, even in top shape – the rigors of twisting turning. Not all of them escape the dangers.

Wasn’t till i was bout 62 I just couldn’t work much. Have done yoga, PT, acupuncture, chiro, massage, drugs, shots, all of it but surgery. Drs say the disc degeneration/stenosis is too risky too risk operating. Could be paralyzed. So I feel pucky, I’ve still got my guitars and voice. Can’t stand up to play, but we adapt.

I sure hope this is just a blip for Joe. He’s got a brilliant future, I think.

  110. That’s because he’s pitched great lately – until 2-3 weeks ago, his numbers were mediocre.

  111. Thanks. I’ll get over it.

Just a pain to replace so much stuff when I was quite happy with what I had.

  112. Can’t wait for a Mattingly trip to the mound for the epic DTT-Latos Scowl-Off Contest

  113. Mike Leake’s WHIP is 1.149 on the season – it’s been even better the last month:

    Last 36 IP, he’s allowed 23 hits and 7 walks – 25 Ks, 0 HR, & a 1.25 ERA.

He’s driven his price up a bit the last month.

  114. Unfortunately.

He was supposed to save that stuff for PacBell, like Peavy did last year.

  115. You should plan or vacation weeks around the trade deadline, Baby Bro! This is like Footy’s Bounce House

  116. He and Hamels are the two guys I’m willing to trade Susac and others for.

  117. Trade proposal: The entire Krazy Krab sandwich franchise, the Coke slide in left field, and five Blue Bottle Coffee shops — for Felix Hernandez.

  118. Sorry – anyway you slice it, he’s making Walt Jocketty happy by driving up his value.

  119. It isn’t nuts to say that they need a high quality utility infielder to give the other guys a rest at this point in the season. Getting a guy like that might be more expensive than getting a decent 3rd baseman. Logically, since the Giants already have a high quality utility guy, the easy target is 3rd. How nice would it be to have Duffy off the bench when the other 4 are starting? I think Duffy is young enough that he can adapt to the new role just fine and not be threatened by it, especially if the 3rd baseman is a rental. Do I see it happening this season, not really.

  120. His K/9 is under 6 and we all know what happened in his one playoff start. I think the Reds will value him too high and don’t think he’s worth anything more than B- level prospects. A recent hot streak doesn’t change that. He has a career ERA+ of exactly 100 which is a very accurate measurement of who he is…a league average pitcher who doesn’t walk many but also doesn’t strike anybody out. Not enough difference between him and Vogey IMO to give up anyone of significant value.

  121. if you want to continue a “dynasty” you trade any of your top minor league “prospects” for hamels..he’s young enough and under control….what do you need the prospects for? teams is young enough with enough money coming free next year to fill in…..

  122. Keep up the good work with the prospecting and I hope you can make it to see Mella as I’ll be looking forward to your report.

  123. Maybe Kershaw is scratched because he is being traded for Arias

  124. For what it’s worth, I think Mike Leake is a winner and would fit perfectly with the San Francisco Giants. This is a guy that skipped the minor leagues by going straight from Arizona State to the big leagues. He is a very gifted athlete.

  125. So Dodgers got a washed up outfielder who helped the Giants win the WS last year and a pitcher who gave up the grand slam to Posey. Is Colletti still running the Dodgers?

  126. Keeping things clean, it can be said that exercising the front stiffness Can awaken the back stiffness’ demand to reign supreme..

  127. Your disqus name is dated my friend. Couple of washed up has-beens on there.

  128. Hamels should be a priority. If Susac goes in that trade, then it’s okay.

But Susac should not be traded for a rental or a #3 type pitcher.

I also think Parra, who can play CF, should be acquired even if it mean level pitching prospect. The reality is that Pagan needs a platoon partner due to his health.

The “think outside the box” solution is to call up one of the best pitching prospects now and roll the dice.

Hudson needs to be DL’d for certain. He’s just a +4 pitcher for the most part.

  129. 12:12pm: The Giants are “fading” back of the pack chasing Hamels, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. San Francisco has not communicated with the Phillies on a deal in the last 24 hours, he adds.

It’s not entirely surprising to hear that San Francisco could fall
out of the running. The club does have plenty of options in its
rotation, so the immediate need is not pressing. And the Giants arguably
lack the same stable of high-upside minor leaguers that other teams
    with interest can dangle.

  130. I still think Cain can get it done. He has the velocity and the movement. AND the experience. He will be working with Reghetti and Gardner. I think he can make it all the way back.

  131. No reason he can’t have a run like Peavy did last year – heck, both of them could be a two headed monster of sorts.

  132. Another dig at the farm system. Yeah, the Giants just don’t develop players very well, do they?

  133. We’ll know soon enough what the cost of business is.

  134. Thank you for the link. This is very encouraging for the future.

  135. Giants have a good number of B level prospects

  136. Well it appears most other teams view the Giants prospects as only B-level, so perhaps more along the lines of C-level then 🙂

  137. Blanco is a better CF then Para, and is starting today in CF today for Pagan, Para rarely plays CF and is much better in the corner OF.

  138. “high-upside minor leaguers” are usually the toolsy, flashy variety. The system just doesn’t have these at the moment. They have good prospects and they have a deep system, but with Crick falling back, they lack that top shelf prospect. It’s a fair remark.

  139. I really like Parra as well. 2 GG speak for themselves.

  140. Vogey has similar velocity and stuff, the only difference is the contract .

  141. Matt Duffy and Joe Panik were once B-/C+ guys, IIRC.

C+ guys can still excel based on the tools they have.

  142. quite a show he’s put on for the G’s brass.

  143. Duh.
Sounds to me as if Krukow, like Marty, like Baggs and even now like Seward – is trying to seize the fanatic’s (us) interest in the hair trigger reactionary aspect of following this game.

I’m with you. It ain’t broke. You “fix” it, you break it.

  144. So he is league average, that is so much better than Hudson and Cain right now. AT&T makes him better and then the Giants offense is strong enough to support him on the road against a tough opponent. Remember the chance of prospects making it in the bigs are low, so he would probably be worth it.

  145. IF guys like Duffy, Panik & Heston keep performing, isn’t this “top shelf prospect” stuff pretty unfair?

Or is this the residue of Sabean shipping off minor league guys for pennant stretch help, and our prospects traded away haven’t flourished?

  146. We should win today, we got 2 shortstops!

    #SFGiants lineup:
    Aoki lf
    Blanco cf
    Duffy 3b
    Pence rf
    Belt 1b
    Crawford ss
    Sanchez c
    Adrianza ss
    Peavy p

  147. Eejits shoulda hung onto Dan Haren when they had him.

  148. I’m not disagreeing with you but I think the Reds would want Susac or Beede or Mella or Arroyo included and if that’s the case I’d laugh at them and slam down the phone. He would *absolutely* be an upgrade but at what cost is my concern. I don’t think he’s worth giving up a promising minor league prospect since he’s a free agent on top of the fact that is K rate is minuscule. I’d probably part with Crick because at this point his stock has tumbled and it doesn’t look like he’ll ever make it as a starter. Otherwise I’d pass and hope Vogey can get it done (and yes I agree Hudson is cooked).

  149. Do these guys just fire these off to look smart? Cuz it looks stupid.

  150. If these hit tool guys with high contact rates that spray line drives all over the field continue to outperform higher ceiling, toolsy guys that may walk and K more often, then I imagine perceptions will change.

The Giants just may be ahead of the curve. Arroyo seems to fit the Duffy & Panik mold.

  151. Totally agree. Everyone assumes Beede Susac is soooo attractive to the phillies…who the f knows?

  152. I’m not a doctor – but Opie’s herky-jerky motion is gonna take its toll on his hips. Damn.

  153. The new rhetorical dodge is to say Giants prospects have high floors and can’t be expected to improve much.

  154. I need to suck it up 🙂

Could be tough environment to pitch in though, with the heat, the hard infield and the relative bandbox in Visalia.

  155. Remember, they’ve got 2 years of Morse @ $7.5M IRRC.

  156. exactly. who knows what their scouts think of anybody – they’re the phillies afterall.

  157. “High floor, low ceiling”. Yeah, that’s the saying. They’ve certainly been raising the roof!

  158. Agree – what more does the kid have to do. Did you see that DP he started Monday? – he did a 2B pivot @ 3B to throw to Panik, who completed the play. A thing of beauty.

  159. Quags – trash? Nice language for a Giants fan to use.

  160. Bob Nightengale raised that Puig for Hamels option again.

  161. The Giants are also continuing to build teams that fit their park–contact, grind-it-out hitters, not relying on the long ball, pitch-to-contact pitchers with a great IF defense. It’s a good formula and it’s working.

  162. I’d be open to trading Belt. He’s blocking Posey from moving to 1B.

  163. LOL. What’s blocking Posey from moving to 1B is that he’s the best catcher in baseball.

  164. You’d think they’d have some better looking, rangy outfielders for that spacious field of play. Blanco can’t do it by himself! Here’s to Fargas down the road. Maybe Mac in corner.

Ground balls to an air tight infield is smart baseball.

  165. I think it will be better next year – elbow surgery takes time…

  166. Help me out; why is K rate important to you? How does Leake’s compare to Heston’s? Or is that not a good apples to apples comparison?

  167. It’s very easy to spend other people’s money, isn’t it?

  168. That Ryan Hanigan body language on Posey’s GS NEVER gets old. 🙂

  169. I agree it did echo the thoughts of many here. Especially his click grabbing headline with the blatant tease “.. If they have any hope of repeating.”

But to me, that does Not make it a great write up. In fact it makes it a lazy, cliched, and pandering write up. It encourages the trigger happy maniacs around here. One bad start, all of a sudden we’re to think that management simply ignores the 12 out of 13 winning jag and just signs someone for the sake of signing. It’s like that bumper sticker – ‘Jesus is coming. Look busy.’

Carl’s normal strength is to see past that simplistic BS and leave such knee jerk conjecture to the self professed experts here at our favourite blog.

    Carl, you’re better than that.

  170. I’d be open to trading clunky for Eric Surkamp…

  171. Or..you buck the popular trend, like you usually do, and simply continue to win.

I would love Hamels or Price. I also love the roster (save a couple of sore spots) . Either / or…I won’t freak

  172. They had that for about five minutes in 2012 with Melky, Angel, and Blanco. Adding Pence was a great move, and he manages fine out there. They need a better CF for the future and they need to stop putting water buffaloes in LF, too.

Mac is a good OF. He runs well and has a good arm. Maybe he and Fargas are the guys for the future. I wonder how Hunter Cole does in the OF–he certainly can hit.

  173. I actually love watching the fan reactions in the background. Especially in last years Crawford grand-slam in WC game in Pitt and Belts HR in NLDS game 2

  174. No way. No one will buy clunky. Damaged goods.

  175. Buster will be the catcher as long as he wants to. Trading Belt will change nary a thing other than being short a 1B

  176. Heston’s K/9 rate this year is 7.1.
Leake’s is 5.9 (down from 6.9 last year).

Heston is pretty lethal because he can strike guys out AND get the ground balls. He’s been quite a revelation.

  177. Ohh Dusty, running into that double play down by 3 runs….

I don’t miss those brain rattling decisions in the playoffs from him.

  178. I am lazily repeating this post that I used a ways below here in response to a regular praising Carl’s write up as a good one, and reasoning so because it “echoes the thoughts of many here at GE”. I fired off my “just my opinion, man” thoughts and decided to play. Stir the stinging insects up even more, why not. For the record, I usually like Carl’s stuff, but today’s thing struck me as just a prop to get people to read his well thought out analysis of possible trades. The headline is where I saw the red flag. Well, I already said it here:

“I agree it did echo the thoughts of many here. Especially his click grabbing headline with the blatant tease “.. If they have any hope of repeating.”

But to me, that does Not make it a great write up. In fact it makes it a lazy, cliched, and pandering write up. It encourages the trigger happy maniacs around here. One bad start, all of a sudden we’re to think that management just ignores the 12 out of 13 winning jag and just signs someone for the sake of signing. It’s like that bumper sticker – ‘Jesus is coming. Look busy.’

Carl’s normal strength is to see past that simplistic BS and leave such knee jerk conjecture to the self professed experts here at our favourite blog.

    Carl, you’re better than that.”

  179. Exactly, I can only think of 1 prospect who will be ready next year, the rest aren’t a guarantee at all and not exactly a necessity either. The vast majority of this team is win now and the next few years. Hamels, Bum and Heston can get it done this year and the next 3. Besides, he must be kept from the Dodgers. They can have Sheilds or Price for all I care, they aren’t proven winners the way Hamels is.

  180. I wonder about Cole too. He can hit, his play in LF looked like it could use some work, but he seems athletic enough to be a capable 4th/5th OF that can come off the bench.

They should probably shift Slater back to the OF so he can work on striving to this end as well.

  181. Maybe his K rate goes up with Posey and the pitching coaches.

  182. Yeah, blocking. Imagine that. The Allstar, 3 time champ catcher, MVP soon to be again, no hit calling Pitcher Whisperer, Buster Posey. How dare Bob Belt block him from his true destiny as a right handed first baseman. The nerve.

Go back to KNBR and gather round for more of the chum swill they throw off the boat daily. Go, swim along. Keep moving.

  183. Not sure I agree with that. I’ve been saying since spring training I think the Giants need to improve the SP to contend into October and that hasn’t changed despite the prolific ebbs and flows of the season. The Giants are on a roll now and last nights game did not change the consistent theme that the Giants could really use an upgrade to the rotation. Cain has been shaky since coming back, probably a lot of rust but I agree with Carl that having a 27 year old rookie as your #2 starter is an uncomfortable position to be in. Peavy has been solid since coming back but the starters aren’t going enough innings and are too inconsistent. I don’t think the Giants should give up major prospects for anyone but Hamels (which seems highly unlikely that they get him) but I think the FO would be wise to explore a rotation upgrade.

  184. Up here, it’s pretty much GB% or K rate. Rarely do you get both.

  185. What has Brownie done for us lately? Answer- told the truth. Again.

  186. Thanks CC. Unfortunately, Who is care? Is the vast wasteland of (non) opinion.

  187. Some have said he’s still on Sabe’s payroll.
    Under deep cover.

  188. Madison Bumgarner will make his last start a 25year old on Friday. He has 78 wins in his career before age 26

Warren Spahn, the winningest left handed pitcher in history did not get his FIRST win till he was 25 years old and finished his 20 year career with 363 including winning 23 games at age 42.

  189. Ah well, he’s entertaining. And if Souza can extol the virtues of Kobe in and ongoing attempt at Laker relevance, what the H?

  190. The phrase “prospect pedigree” makes me want to hurl. It’s nice to him getting some recognition even if the ROY race was decided before it even began.

  191. I don’t like it either. Maybe he has a pact with the Gs and will hit .171 with 1 RBI and 0 HRs for the rest of the season.

  192. Question, when the Doyers come into town and Morse is actually playing … do I boo the guy? I mean, I love the guy too much and it’s not like he purposely signed with them. I almost feel like the Doyers did it just to tweak our noses.

  193. K rate is important because otherwise a lot of success from start to start can be luck dependent. Also in the postseason you need pitchers who can miss bats otherwise it can get ugly (such as with some of the starts from Peavy and Hudson last year in the postseason). I’m not saying a pitcher needs to be a K machine but Leake’s K rate is alarmingly low meaning he needs more luck than most pitchers on any given night. Again he has value and is a solid pitcher, but not one IMO worth giving up prospects with any kind of promise. Currently Heston’s K rate is 7.1/9 and Leake’s is 5.9/9 so Heston is much better. As much as I love Heston this is his first time through the league and who knows if he can sustain this success on an annual basis. It’s not that I wouldn’t want Leake in the Giants rotation, it’s that he’s not worth what the Reds will want in exchange and further he’s a FA after this year so that makes it even worse.

  194. The Marlins made the Dodgers take Morse in the Latos deal: straight salary dump.

  195. Twitter says SD may be busy trying to move Venable, Benoit, Kennedy and Upton in the next 48 hours.

And COL supposedly is only 30/70 on moving CarGo (if the Mets had balls and $$ – it seems they have neither – that’s who they should get, IMO).

  196. You give him a round of applause at the beginning of the game and then boo him heartily after

  197. You give him a rousing cheer when introduced the first time at the plate and boo him after that!

  198. It is sure is nice when all people have to complain about is the reporters writing.

  199. Tough call. Maxwell better defender but Morse probably better hitter off the bench

  200. I read a week or so ago, that, at that time, Heston led MLB in GB%.

  201. Ill respond since you commented on my post below. Ultimately, It’s your view vs my view. Sometimes other writers on the beat or
whomever will dispel the calls for this pitcher or that position player,
saying “everyone needs to be patient.” I like that Carl just comes out
as says it point blank, the Giants need to upgrade their SP if they want
to get back to the world series.

You bring up the 12 in 13 but just remember, this team was in a bad losing streak before that. You can’t really say a great set of wins vs mediocre teams solves all the issues. As many others have said, the true test comes up here in August when they go on the road and play actual teams with winning records.

Come October, we may all be talking about the trade deadline saying “good thing they didn’t make any moves, we made it to the playoffs all on our own!” or we could be looking at the Dodgers and Pirates and Mets starting the playoffs and wondering what could have been.

I don’t really think its click
bait either, most of the people on this blog are going to read it no
matter what title says, or who writes it, at least that is the case for me.

  202. Ask the pitchers, but I can’t really see a place for Morse anymore. Whose HR rate is more reliable? Morse is only passable in the OF if the pitcher is a groundball guy.

  203. Panik’s bad back stems from the cue shot by Gomez in Monday nights game where he body blocked it – rolled over and tried to toss to Romo.

  204. Unless Puig is headed out of town for Hamels. Then it makes some sense, IMO. Just a little, but some.

  205. It just struck me as odd that such a decision made a while ago would have had such a negative impact on Jazz and Classical catalogs.

  206. Yes, but getting Parra will make the team much stronger. Like Blanco, Parra can play all 3 OF positions. And Parra has a rocket of an arm and hits for power.

It’s not a knock on Blanco. It’s about making a strong run for the title.

  207. I have to put Marty in the shade more often. Too many sun-rays for him. On his post game Sunday show he said that Sunday’s country hats were ‘pretty good’. Uhh…no thanks ML.

  208. Nice seats! Great angle to watch a ball game.

  209. From ESPN Insider Jim Bowden:

“What would it take to get Cole Hamels?”

    5. San Francisco Giants

    Half-game behind in NL West
Hamels for … RHP Tyler Beede, RHP Kyle Crick and C Andrew Susac

The Giants appear to be all-in on Hamels. To land him, however, they will have to empty the farm system and over pay, which rookie GM Bobby Evans might be willing to do. The package would start with their best pitching prospect and former first round pick Beede, who is the real thing and just a couple of years away from the majors. Susac would be the second player in the deal and should solve catching for the Phillies for years to come. He’s blocked in San Francisco behind Buster Posey so it’s only a matter of time before he’s dealt anyway. Finally, Crick would be the third player in the deal. Crick has great stuff, but just hasn’t yet figured out a consistent delivery and release point. That has led to inconsistent his command. He looks more like a reliever, but paired with the right pitching coach could still have good potential.
    http://espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/insider/post?id=11235

  210. Hopefully the Mets don’t – wouldn’t want more Wild Card competition just in case Giants don’t roll right on by the Bums.

  211. isn’t Morse on the books for next year too? sure think so , at around 8 mil

  212. Bochy on Parra.

    — Bochy on Parra: “He’s really having a nice year. He’s playing
well. It’s just not us he’s hitting. You see his numbers, he’s a good
player. I’ve always thought Parra was a really nice player and he’s
having a great year. When you look at numbers like he’s putting up, he’s
    being consistent.”
I don’t know where Parra will end up on Friday, but he’ll be a difference-maker for somebody.”

  213. Since Cuzy is behind the plate, and Peavy is pitching….this could be an energetic outing.

  214. Not bad for a guy who has to keep track of all 30 teams. If they want Crick they can have him. He makes a good argument for why Susac can go, besides the Giants won with defense only catching twice. As for Beede, he would be the hardest to part with, but he won’t make the impact this year or next the way Hamels probably will. I would gamble that Bickford can be substituted for Beede by the time Hamels is done and make the trade.

  215. like a bad teacher, they should at least stick him in a rubber room.

Hey, off topic here, but did you ever read Cadillac Desert? I’ve got it going right now.

  216. Sorry to but in but Cadillac Desert should be required reading for everyone W of the Mississippi. Easily in my top 10 list.

  217. Years ago. There is a documentary of the same name as well. Hard to find, but fascinating stuff.

  218. The latrine is a perfect place to take a ….

  219. I’d do it in a heartbeat. Not sold on Susac defensively and Beede has a ways to go. If winning matters now, Hamels is the way to go

  220. Isn’t that the point though – to get them triggers clickin’

Baggs does with it some artistry. This ain’t the good ol’ days, but it just might be the Wild West.

“hot chili peppers in the blistering sun…”

  221. Good Knowledge! Bum really could be a once in a generation player.

  222. Times have changed but is the rate at which guys had long careers pitching lots of innings really that much lower now?

  223. enjoying the early history – the pioneers like Powell in the Green River rapids with one arm! Jedidiah Smith’s great adventures in California.

Then this Mulholland guy comes along…

  224. Cadillac Desert – yet another reason to dislike all things L.A.

  225. He’ll probably eject Vogey from the dugout.

  226. If you like the pioneer stuff you’ll enjoy

Beyond the Hundredth Meridian- Wallace Stegner’s writting about the sucesses and frustrations of John Wesley
    Powell’s exploration of the
Colorado River and the Grand Canyon.

  227. Do the deal!!! Hamels for RHP Tyler Beede, RHP Kyle Crick and C Andrew Susac now. Keep him out of LA too. Try and substitute Hector for Susac but if the Phils balk then give them Susac too. The Giants are lousy at getting Free Agent pitchers signed at whatever price they offer them. Shields took less $$ to go to SD then SF offered (rumor), and they struck out on all other Free Agents in early 2015 leaving the team with a depleted and thin rotation Heston has rescued. Give up on Pain Cain being a #2 – he’s your #4 or #5 – the contract is too long for way way too many $$. That’s just facts. Moving on – Cain is what he is, an overpaid #4.

Hamels will be good for 2-3 more years at least. He’s not a rental, his contract is fixed, trade him. Bickford could arrive in 2 years anyways.

  228. I heard that too. What I thought Kruk was trying to say is that Duffy can sub in at SS and 2B if need be. He wasn’t trying to suggest Duffy go to the bench, rather that he can spell Crawford or Panik while someone else covers 3rd.

  229. Aside from the political angle, pick up The Man Who Walked Through Time. A remarkable classic of nature writing by the first man ever to have walked the entire length of the Grand Canyon.

  230. A little light in the lineup today. Who will step up?

  231. Brownie – well said, Hamels is not a rental either signed for couple more years. Team would dump that $$ into a FA anyways in the offeseason, do it now. Get Hamels signed for 2015, 16, 17, 18. A MadBum – Hamels – Heston – Peavy/Cain rotation can win some playoff series and potential titles.

  232. This kid (far right) went from my ace RHP during summer ball to the Honor Guard. He was asked work at Camp David almost a year ago. He has his presidential clearance and now works security at Camp David. The stories have been incredible. Am going to visit when he gets final clearance and can have peeps on the base. If he or others posts pics from Camp David he loses all his clearances. He loves being in the Navy and occasionally plays softball on base.

  233. Oh ok, don’t do the deal because you don’t feel like it??- your personal opinion isn’t worth much to many here myself included. Do the deal, get a stud to pair with Madbum.

  234. Would luv for team to get Parra. Hamels + Parra would be what this team needs at the trade deadline to overcome the Dodgers and their mediocre acquisitions today in 2015 Morse and 2015 version of Latos. If the Reds or Padres want to trade Chapman or Kimbrel too we could use a top flight closer.

  235. Probably all of them. A couple hits from Duffy, Belt going deep, Crawford and Pence with big RBI’s…

Even minus the two best hitters, it’s still a pretty decent lineup.

  236. Nice. Good work helping to mold young men as you do – and doing your best with the trouble makers.

  237. ‘Course it’s the point. Clicked my trigger.
And, you know me. I rarely say anything very passionate about baseball.
My objection is simply the knee jerk that one outing, one inning, one pitch – determines whether your team of choice goes to the playoffs. And Carl does know better than that.

Funny, was just listening to Desire.
And here in Paso, it feels like those hot peppers are blistering.
We have to go to SLO, should be cooler.
Picking up an acoustic guitar I got from Japan awhile back for Diane.
They overhauled it at Butch’s guitar, a San Luis fixture. Sigh, he’s moving to Bend Oregon, so am getting all the setups and adjustments in now while he’s here.
Look him up. Butch Boswell. Making top end ($$$) acoustics now. Got one reviewed and photo essay in PlayGuitarboy magazine. Er, Gutar Player I think. He’s the best.
Has a good website, if you look hard enough you’ll see me in a section describing his construction of “Butch’sCustom” early Tele guitar I bought in 2009 or so. He chronicles his work very nicely. Anyway, I digressed again, have a great day.

  238. Don’t get me wrong, I agree there’s Always a better way. But to couch it in terms that one outing is a season changer, that’s just hyperbole. And Carl’s usually not that way. I’d expect that headline from The Bagger.

  239. I dunno…MadBum was barely 21 when he pitched in the 2010 WS, only played four pro games in 2009, so he was practically a rookie. True, he wasn’t the #2 then but not having the pressure to be the ace of the SP’s, is there really a whole lot of difference between #2 & #5? Heston is 27, that is a much bigger difference in maturity and experience from 21. I think if given the chance, Heston could really come through like MadBum did.

  240. Agree with most of that. But it is click bait. I’m proof. I almost Never respond with much verve to such things. So it worked. And I’m still clicking.

As for getting back to the WS, I just get annoyed that anyone definitively knows what it takes. Remember when the Padres “won” the offseason? What a laff.

And most folks would agree the Giants really did not have a good enough team to win it all in seasons past. But they did.

And yes, that’s just your Opinion, man. Which we’re both entitled to. That’s why I presented my position as an opinion, not a fact.

  241. Of course, differing opinions make this blog fun, I am all for it.

  242. Woj said: “your personal opinion isn’t worth much to many here myself included”

*How wrong you are “Meester” – ask around.

  243. He said it was his opinion. Why EVERYTHING you have proposed NEVER gets done by the SF Brass? LOL

  244. I never read the title so I couldnt care less. And BTW, does he even write the title anyway?

  245. It’s a remarkable book if you are/were into wilderness hiking (1963).

  246. Yeah, and the “disappearing” of music is specially disturbing.
I’m listening to all vinyl this morning. Not any real reason, it’s the only format some of this stuff is on. At least for me. Plus, it’s fun.

  247. huh? did you clearly digest what i wrote? you “continue to win” even more with a stud like hamels….we all love this roster….you don’t touch it to get hamels unless you include susac….that’s ok…

  248. no problem since there are no guarantees there and the team as constituted is young…
