An 88-year-old man apparently shot his wife to death at her Novato care home before killing himself, police said.

The couple was identified as Walter and Betty Benson. She was 87.

The incident occurred Friday afternoon at Atria Tamalpais Creek, a residential complex for seniors at 853 Tamalpais Ave. Police found the Bensons dead of gunshot wounds in the same bed, and the weapon was in the room, said Novato police Sgt. Michael Howard.

Police released no other details about the couple’s circumstances but said the investigation is continuing. The Marin County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office is also investigating the deaths.

Atria Tamalpais Creek released a statement saying Mr. Benson was not a resident there.

“We were deeply saddened to learn of the deaths of one of our residents and her husband, a non-resident who was visiting her at our community,” the statement said. “Our hearts go out to their family, friends and all those who knew and loved them. We notified the police as soon as we learned about the situation, and we are cooperating fully in their review of the circumstances.

“Our first priority is respecting the privacy of the family and doing everything we can to support them. We will assist them and anyone in our community affected by this situation in any way we can. We have a grief counselor in the community available to speak with our residents and employees.”

Atria Tamalpais Creek, which offers assisted-living services, has about 96 residents.
