OAKLAND — A 2-year-old girl bit by a rattlesnake Tuesday in Bay Point was in stable condition Wednesday, a spokeswoman at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland said.

Hospital officials also on Wednesday identified the toddler as Ishneet Kaur. The family did not wish to speak publicly but gave the hospital permission to release the girl’s name, hospital spokeswoman Melinda Krigel said.

Doctors will continue to monitor Ishneet Wednesday, but she could be released Thursday or Friday, Krigel said.

The rattler bit Ishneet about 8 p.m. at a home in a neighborhood off San Marco Boulevard near Delta View Elementary, Contra Costa fire officials said. After emergency workers tended to her, she was taken by helicopter to the North Oakland hospital.

The juvenile snake, which was found nearby and killed, was also taken to the hospital to help doctors treat Ishneet.

What to do if bitten by a rattlesnake

The East Bay Regional Park District offers the following tips for people bitten by a rattlesnake:
Stay calm and have someone call 911.
The victim should remain calm by lying down with the affected limb lower than the heart.
Wash the wound, if possible.
If you are by yourself, walk calmly to the nearest source of help. Do not run.
If bitten by another kind of snake, wash the wound with soap and water or an antiseptic and seek medical attention.
